The 40th Anniversary of Chen Kaige’s Yellow Earth
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of the film Yellow Earth (1984). Directed by Chen Kaige, it premiered at international film festivals the following year, winning critical acclaim and launching Chinese art cinema onto the global cinematic stage.
This one-day conference on Sunday 5 May, held directly after the ‘Pan-Asian Quest of Cultural Authenticity: The Fantastic and the Folkloric in Film and the Creative Industries’ conference at University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), celebrates this film by re-examining it 40 years after its creation, analysing its legacy and influence since its release. The conference will also examine the wider impact of China’s Fifth and Sixth Generation films and the ways these films have influenced cinema not only through their cinematography, aesthetics and themes, but also their reception both inside and outside China and their effects on the creative and cultural industries and film festival circuits.
The event will be a hybrid conference, with both in-person and online presentations. Proposals for 20 minute presentations should be submitted using the following form by midnight (China Standard Time), Sunday 31 March 2024 - https://forms.office.com/r/xN48YSD5sW
A full programme and abstracts will be available near the time of the conference. For questions, please contact Corey.Schultz@nottingham.edu.cn.
