On July 28, the 2023 Global English Education China Assembly, with the theme of "New Opportunities for China's New Development in the World - Creating a New Situation of Opening Up and Cooperation in English Education", was held in Macau. As a special partner of the conference, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) sent representatives, including staff from Centre for English Language Education and Business Development Office, participating in a number of sessions, including paper presentations, exhibition booth, and presenting teacher training programmes, which aimed to empower English teaching to the attendees from all over the world.
Speeches at the conference
A number of teachers from CELE delivered speeches at the conference and shared their experience in English teaching and learning with experts, scholars and teachers.
Virginia Parker delivered a topic on "Inclusive practice through design: The "Strategies for readable PowerPoints". Her presentation is designed to show how to use simple and practical methods to design easy-to-read PPT for students.
Peter Beech delivered a speech on "Integrating theory and practice", discussing the objectives and measurement of language learning, and taking a British school as an example to introduce how to create an English environment for encouraging learner autonomy and creativity.
David Anstey and Shanru Yang presented a topic of "STEAM and EAP education in an EMI university in China: Teachers' roundtable discussion in UNNC 2023", which was about the roundtable discussion on UNNC EAP/ESP Conference in April 2023. More than 20 professionals including content teachers of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), and English for Academic Studies (EAP) teachers joined the roundtable discussion.
Liz Lin shared about her study on "Investigate postgraduate students' experiences on an MA TESOL at an English as the medium of instruction university in China. Lecture on instruction university in China. Taking UNNC as an example, she shared students' experience for taking MA TESOL courses, and put forward enlightenment and suggestions on how students should adapt to the curriculum taught in English and how the universities should actively explore MA TESOL.
Abulaiti Maihepireti presented a speech on "Novice EAP teacher's professional development", introducing the challenges faced by novice academic English teachers in terms of teaching content, skills and knowledge. And emphasized the importance of EAP training.
Yuan Yuan brought the theme of "Coping with online English teaching challenges: Practical techniques and strategies to support and motivate learners online ", sharing practical techniques and strategies to support and motivate learners online. And introducing how to better apply the practical online teaching technology to the future teaching.
Exhibition booth of UNNC
UNNC set up a booth at the International English Education China Conference to bring the latest introduction and official materials of the NINo 2023 Teacher Professional Development program, including the online Cambridge International Teacher Professional Development Certificate Program, hoping to better assist teachers in their English teaching work.
