The Belt and Road Languages and Cultures Network

On 15-16 October, on the eve of the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, the Belt and Road Languages and Cultures Network, initiated by China Daily, was formally established in Beijing. The University of Nottingham Ningbo (UNNC), as one of the inaugural members, officially became a member of the Belt and Road Languages and Cultures Network, and David Anstey, a representative of the University of Nottingham Ningbo, attended the meeting.

Belt and Road Languages and Cultures Network is a cross-region, cross-language, open international cooperation mechanism for language and culture initiated by China Daily, with the participation of language, education and Cultures organisations at home and abroad. Qu Yingpu, President and Editor-in-Chief of China Daily, Wang Guangyan, Vice Minister of Education, Zhai Dongsheng, Director of the Belt and Road Construction Promotion Center, and representatives of more than 60 colleges and universities and institutions from more than 50 countries attended the inaugural meeting of the alliance.

On 16th May 2023, The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between 21st Century English Education Media, China Daily (21st Century for short) and University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC for short) at New International Conference Centre, UNNC. According to the MOU, the two sides will establish two-way cooperation on the "Academic exchange and cooperation programme", committed to enhancing academic exchanges and cooperation, promoting professional development of teachers and personnel training, and exploring a new model of integrated development of foreign language education and international communication. With the signing of the MoU, UNNC was invited to join the Belt and Road Languages and Cultures Network, which will contribute to the implementation of the Belt and Road Education Initiative and the promotion of regional education development and cultural exchanges.

In the conference, Qu Yingpu pointed out that Xi Jinping's Cultures Thought was formally put forward in the work of public communication and culture, which is of fundamental significance in guiding us to carry out exchanges and cooperation in the fields of language education and culture in the "Belt and Road". On behalf of the chairman of the Belt and Road Languages and Cultures Network, he expects the member units to promote the exchange of civilisations through language interoperability, and to build a bridge of mutual understanding among the people of the Belt and Road countries, and to broaden the path of cooperation through openness in education, to lay a solid foundation for the construction of the "Belt and Road". The opening up of education will broaden the path of cooperation and lay a solid foundation for building a stable and far-reaching "Belt and Road"; and youth exchanges will renew the friendship of the millennium and unite the power of youth for the high-quality development of the "Belt and Road".

On behalf of the Ministry of Education, Wang Guangyan warmly congratulated the establishment of the Belt and Road Languages and Cultures Network. He pointed out that language is the carrier of human civilization and the link to promote Cultures exchanges, Cultures integration and popular support. China will further deepen the pragmatic cooperation with the co-construction of the “Belt and Road Initiative" country, vigorously promote the common values of all mankind, and make new and greater contributions to enhancing people's mutual understanding and deepening civilized exchanges and mutual learning.

Zhai Dongsheng said that the Belt and Road Language and Cultures Network has built a platform for communication between Chinese and foreign language, education and Cultures circles, which will inject strong new vitality into the high-quality joint construction of the “Belt and Road Initiative". He suggested that the alliance deepen exchanges and cooperation and build a “Belt and Road Initiative" public opinion base; Strengthen the training of talents to provide strong talent support for the joint construction of the “Belt and Road Initiative" and give play to the role of demonstration and lead, so that the alliance will continue to grow bigger and stronger.

As the first Sino-foreign university in China, UNNC enjoys an extremely broad international vision and has more than 900 full-time professors and staff from more than 60 countries and regions around the world, sharing the rich resources of the three campuses of University of Nottingham (China, UK and Malaysia) and partners around the world (including Fortune 500 companies and famous business consulting companies).

• Promote the international humanities exchange mode

UNNC has an open and inclusive learning environment, living environment and humanistic atmosphere. It is a natural fertile ground for cross-Cultures communication. In 2022, it was listed as an international Cultures exchange base in Zhejiang Province. UNNC not only allowed international teachers and students to enter China and get to know China through various forms of Cultures exchange activities such as calligraphy, tea ceremonies and opera but also set up a bridge to all parts of the world through international public welfare volunteer service activities, making contributions to the language, education and Cultures exchange and co-construction of the “Belt and Road Initiative".
