Project title: A study on two-way momentum and thermal-coupled bubble laden turbulent shear flows

Amount funded: 30,000 RMB

Duration: Jan 2018 - Jun 2019

Abstract:

The aim of this project is to investigate the vorticity dynamics of dilute two-way coupled bubble-laden turbulent shear layers. A doubly Lagrangian modelling approach will be employed to study two-way coupling mechanisms between the dispersed phase and carrier fluid, with an emphasis on the resulting modifications to the fluid vorticity field. The methods will be based on discrete vortex modelling (DVM) and will take into account the influence of particles or entrained bubbles on the vorticity field of turbulent shear layers. Experiments on the bubble-vortex interaction will also be conducted. The specific objectives that will determine the success of the project are:

(1) To propose a novel doubly Lagrangian based numerical method that provides an accurate description of the vorticity dynamics of dilute two-way coupled turbulent shear layers.

(2) To compare the proposed modelling approach against existing experimental data of the dispersive transport of bubbles in turbulent shear flows and to demonstrate the feedback influence of the dispersed phase on the vorticity dynamics of turbulent shear layers.

(3) To conduct experiments using a shear layer generated in a simple small-sized water tunnel to investigate the effects of bubble-vortex interactions on the vorticity dynamics of shear layers.
