International Symposium on Nurturing Glocal Talents for the New Era

Date: 17-18 June 2023 

From 17-18 June 2023, the International Symposium on Nurturing Glocal Talents for the New Era was held at UNNC. It was co-organised by: Centre for Researching Education and Language (CREL); International Talents Development and Research Base (ITDRB). The symposium, like its predecessors we successfully hosted on similar themes in 2018, 2021 and 2022, brought together university leaders, educators, administrators, as well as researchers in international higher education (IHE) and local studies for education, home and international, to further develop insights and practical models on nurturing glocal talents in the context of China.

The EdEn Students’ Conference ‘Education and Language: Resilience and Innovation’ was held on 16 June 2023 at UNNC. PhD, EdD and undergraduate students presented their research and obtained feedback from the discussants.

Research Conference ‘Gender, Community and Practices’ took place on 9-10 June, 2023

Date: 9-10 June 2023

The third gender studies conference at UNNC since 2021, it was jointly organised and sponsored by the IAPS Gender Studies Group (GSG), the School of Education and English (EDEN), Ningbo Urban Memory Lab of FOSE, UNNC Overseas Returned Scholars Association (ORSA), and FHSS Gender Studies Dialogues. It consists of one-day research discussion in the Library Multi-function Rooms 01 and 02 at UNNC and one-day exhibition in Demohood with a saloon by female architects and a workshop by female artists. Chaired by Dr. Lily Yu, the organising committee members include Dr. Ashley Ng, Dr. Yat Ming Loo, and Dr. Thomas Whyke. Dr. Celia Lam, Dr. Filippo Gilardi and Dr. Ashley Ng gave welcome speeches. Dr. Zhen Li (EDEN), Dr. Corey Schultze (IC), Dr. Lei Hao (IC), Dr. Candy Veecock (EDEN), Dr. Jianbo Chen (GSG), Dr. Dimple Thadani (NUBS), Ms Teresa Wang (ORSA), Ms Xinyi Fan (EDEN), and Ms Ting Wu (Wuduo Studio) chaired the panels, or talks, or saloon or workshop. Ms Mint Wang, IAPS and FHSS administration officer and Ms Serena Liu, ORSA secretary provided strong logistic support for the conference, together with some students, such as Pengcheng Shen (EDEN), Ziyue Wang (EDEN, FHSS), Weisisi WU (IS, FHSS), Yi Zhu (IS, FHSS), Shufan Yao (ABE, FOSE), Xiaoyu Ye (ABE, FOSE), Qiaoyi Zeng (ABE, FOSE), and Yingwen Zhu (ABE, FOSE). Several students of MA Interpreting and Translation programme--Fuqi Jin, Sichao Li, Chuxing Liang, Zhuofan Tian, and Rueyue Zhao provided simultaneous interpreting service for the conference, under the supervision of Dr. Ken Chen, visiting teaching fellow of EDEN. IT officer Jinhui Hu provided technological and IT support.

FHSS Research Seminar Series: End of Term Publication Talk

Date: 7 June 2023

On 7 June 2023, the Faculty hosted the FHSS End of Term Publication talk as final Research Seminar Series talk for the academic year. The talk featured Lian Sun from Routledge, Taylor and Francis (Beijing) to introduce the Press, the publication process, and provided tips on preparing book proposals. Dr. Dan Shi from the School of Education and English also shared her experience of publishing a monograph with Routledge. The talk was attended by 20 staff and PhD students online.

CREL Launch and the Second FHSS Research Seminar Series: Staff/PGR Talk

Date: 15 March 2023 

On 15 March 2023, the Center for Researching Education and Language (CREL), a new research unit based in the School of Education and English, was officially launched, featuring an introduction by the director of CREL Prof. Anwei Feng from the School of Education and English. The launch was followed by the second FHSS Research Seminar Series: Staff/PGR talk of this semester. Dr Derek Irwin from the School of EdEn gave a talk titled “Understanding Complex Performance Space: a multimodal SFL approach to hybrid theatre production”. Approximately 50 FHSS staff and students attended the session in person and online.

EDEN session of FHSS Research Seminar Series: Staff/PGR talks

Date: 25 May 2022

On 25 May 2022, the School of Education and English hosted the fourth FHSS Research Seminar Series: Staff/PGR talk of the semester. Dr Yijin (Joanna) Lin and Yaxin Zhang, PhD candidate at the School of Education and English, gave talks titled: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”, or can you? – Learning a new language later in life and its effects on psychological well-being”, and “Visibility of the Translator: A Data-driven Analysis of Julia Lovell’s Translator Style” respectively. Approximately 25 FHSS staff and students attended the session online.

The School of Education and English organised the “First Symposium on Local Studies for Education in China

Date: 20-21 May 2022

From 20 to 21 May, 2022, the School of Education and English organised the “First Symposium on Local Studies for Education in China,” in collaboration with the Ningbo Studies Center and the Faculty of Humanities (Shantou University). Professor Anwei Feng, Chair of the Organising Committee, stated that the presentations by speakers from kindergartens, schools, universities and many other education sectors were of true high-quality, mutually informative and intellectually stimulating. It raised local studies to a newer level. The participants became so inspired that they started planning the date and venue for the second symposium and publication on the same theme.

Research Conference ‘Gender and Society’

Date: 19-20 March 2022

From 19-20 March 2022, the online conference, ‘Gender and Society’, was held at UNNC. The conference was sponsored by the IAPS Gender Studies Group (GSG) and jointly organised by colleagues from the School of Education and English (EDEN) and GSG. The conference was opened by Professor Gary Rawnsley, Dean of FHSS, and Dr Filippo Gilardi, Head of the School of International Communications, with keynote speeches by Dr Kay Fullar (UNUK) and Professor Jin Jiang (GSG), and closed by Dr Derek Irwin, Head of the School of Education and English. It was attended by over 40 participants online. The event was organised by Dr Ashley Ng, Dr Lily Yu and Dr Mary Ye from the School of Education and English, and Dr Corey Schultz and Dr Mary Ainslie from the School of International Communications.

EDEN session of FHSS Research Seminar Series: Staff/PGR talks for 2021-22

Date: 20 October 2021

On 20 October 2021, the School of Education and English hosted the second FHSS Research Seminar Series: Staff/PGR talks for 2021-22. Professor Douglas Bell gave a talk titled: “Methodology and pedagogy in EAP: why do they remain neglected areas of attention and what needs to be done about it?”. The talk generated lively discussions about EAP research and relatively positioning with institutions in different global contexts. Approximately 60 FHSS staff and students attended the session in person with 18 joining online.

The research symposium ‘Travelling Theories and the Location of Culture: Translating Feminism and Queer Theory in Contemporary China’ was held on 12-13 June 2021 at UNNC. Around 60 members of audience from all over the world attended it. It was jointly organised and sponsored by the Gender Studies Group of IAPS, Centre for Contemporary East Asian Cultural Studies (UNUK), and School of Education and English, FHSS, UNNC.
