Professor David Hogsette

Head of School of Education and English

Welcome from the Head

Thank you for visiting the website of the School of Education and English (EDEN). Our school is a vibrant multidisciplinary academic unit where you can study many exciting topics, including Applied Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, Translation and Interpretation, English Education and TESOL, Educational Leadership, International Higher Education, International Business Communication, and Literary Studies. Our academic staff come from such regions as Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia, offering diverse international perspectives in teaching, research, and student supervision.

EDEN offers BA programmes in English Language and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, and English with International Business (in collaboration with Nottingham University Business School China). We offer the following postgraduate taught programmes: MA Applied Linguistics, MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, MA International Higher Education, and MA Interpretation and Translation (Mandarin and English). Additionally, we offer a professional doctorate in Education (EdD) and a PhD programme in Education, Linguistics, and English Studies.

Our modules blend foundations in linguistics, education, and literary studies with current academic theories, providing students with an intellectual experience that develops such skills as independent academic inquiry, oral and written communication, critical thinking, and creative expression. These “soft skills” are applicable to any career, making our students highly competitive in the job market. Moreover, most of our graduates pursue postgraduate education at prestigious universities around the world and eventually become teachers and researchers in top universities.

Students can also engage cutting-edge research by partnering with EDEN academic staff on a variety of projects through the Cognitive Neuroscience of Language Lab, the Language and Pedagogy Lab, and the Centre for Researching Education and Language. The research generated by these centres and labs, as well as the other research conducted by our staff, is published in top journals and in books from leading academic presses. A unique feature of our school is the reciprocal relationship among research, teaching, and learning: each informs the others.

We look forward to welcoming you to the School of Education and English and providing support and encouragement as you pursue your academic, personal, and professional goals.
