Dr Candace Veecock is an Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics/ELT in the School of Education and English where she is currently the Director of Teaching. Dr Veecock has a specialisations in French Linguistics, English Applied Linguistics and Special and Inclusive Education. Before joining UNNC in September 2015, Dr Veecock lived and worked in Bordeaux France for 14 years. While in France, she taught professional English healthcare communication for five years to students of various healthcare professions including Nursing, X-Ray Technology/Radiology and Pedicure-Podiatry. With extensive experience in Adult Continuing Education, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) as well as designing and delivering courses and assessments on Medical English and Healthcare Communication, she has also worked with young learners with cognitive and behavioural challenges. Dr Veecock is part of the team of trained Mindfulness Meditation Facilitators who lead sessions for both students and staff (spring 2019 - present).

Research Interests

  • Linguistics: Hybrid passive constructions (English get-passive & French se faire+infinitive passive); agency and agentivity;
  • Communication and Media: English communication for non-native English healthcare professionals, multimodality in political cartoons and infographics;
  • Sino-Foreign Higher Education: Chinese student mobility, graduate attributes, extra-curricular activities; inclusive education, culturally responsive second/foreign language teaching and learning.
