UNNC first started offering Japanese courses in 2006. Some graduates went on to pursue postgraduate studies in Japan. Japanese classes at UNNC aim to establish integrated skills in the language as well as to cultivate in students a foundational understanding of life and culture in Japan. Tutors utilise communicative and blended learning approaches to enhance students' acquisition of communication skills in the language and general academic learning techniques. Learning about Japan's unique culture, students can also begin to develop intercultural competence, a highly valued quality in our ever-globalising society. To facilitate our teaching, we offer an array of student-centred extracurricular activities, such as karaoke contests, culture talks, and the Japanese conversation club. Through these, we build up a community of Japanese language learners at the University, where learners have opportunities to get involved outside of the classroom.
