Visa for new students

All international students at UNNC must have a student visa. For study periods over 180 days, apply for an X1 visa; for less than 180 days, apply for an X2 visa.

Prepare Admission Letter and a JW202 or DQ form

Before starting the visa process, you need an Admission Letter and a JW202 or DQ form.

•   JW202 form: For studies longer than 180 days

•   DQ Form: For studies between 30 and 180 days (short-term international student’s information form) •

The Ministry of Education issues these forms, and UNNC assists with the application after tuition or deposit payments are confirmed. Once approved, students will receive an email with instruction to download their form.

X1 Visa Application

1. Passport
Original passport with at least six months of validity and blank visa pages, plus a photocopy of the information page (and photo page if separate).

2. Visa Application Form and Photo
Completed online Visa Application Form with a recently taken color passport photo (bare-head, full face) against a light background.

3. Proof of legal stay/residence (applicable to those applying for the visa outside of your country of citizenship)
If applying outside your country of citizenship, provide the original and photocopy of your valid certificates or visa of stay, residence, employment or student status, or other valid certificates of legal stay provided by the relevant authorities of the country where you are currently staying and from where you are applying for the China visa.

4. Admission Letter
Original and photocopy issued by the university.

5. Photocopy of JW202 form

X2 Visa Application (Study less than 180 days)

1. Passport 
Original passport with at least six months of validity and blank visa pages, plus a photocopy of the information page (and photo page if separate).

When to apply for X visa

Apply 1 month before entry but not earlier than 3 months before. The visa is valid for 3 months. Processing takes 3-10 working days.

1. Visa knowledge 

    • Validity: Time period allowed to enter China.
    • Number of Entries: Number of times you can enter within the visa's validity.
    • Duration of Stay: Maximum stay per entry. For the X1 visa, you must apply for a residence permit within 30 days after arrival in China.

Police registration

All international students must complete police registration within 24 hours of arriving in China.

  • On-campus: Register through dorm reception during check-in.
  • Off-campus: Register with the student advisor of Department of Campus Life and the local police station using your passport and rental contract.
  • Hotels: Registration is handled by the hotel.

Note: International students are generally expected to live on campus. Off-campus living requires special approval from Department of Campus Life.

How to get a residence permit (X1 Visa holders only)

We assist new international students in obtaining a residence permit from the local immigration office to cover the duration of your studies at UNNC.

Health check

Health check is required for the residence permit application. We organize group health checks for new international students at the Ningbo International Travel Healthcare Centre.

  • Fee: ~500 RMB
  • What to Bring: 2 passport photos, passport, and one photocopy
  • Opening Hours: 8:00 am - 10:45 am (Weekdays)
  • Note: Do not eat breakfast before the health check.

Residence permit application in the local immigration office

We arrange group visits to the immigration office for residence permit applications. Refer to the Welcome Programme for details.

1. Required documents for residence permit:

  • Original passport
  • Original health check report and one copy
  • A copy of your passport and a copy of the visa page & entry stamp
  • A passport-sized photo in white background
  • Admission letters and a copy
  • JW202 form

2. Collect your passport

After 15 working days, collect your passport at the Immigration Office. The collection date, address, and fees are noted on your receipt.

3. Residence permit fee

400 RMB for residency of less than one year

800 RMB for one to less than three years (including one year)

1000 RMB for three to five years (including three years)

4. Traveling in China Without Passport

You can travel within China by train or bus using a receipt from the Immigration Office (stating your passport is being processed) and a copy of your passport. Please notice that the receipt is valid until the collection date for travelling purpose.
