Counsellors 

The University Counselling Service is staffed by professionally trained, accredited and widely experienced counsellors. The team is accustomed to:

  • helping people from many different backgrounds and cultures
  • dealing with a wide range of emotional, personal and mental health problems

Confidentiality

The University Counselling Service works within the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework (2015) and Chinese Mental Health Law. We also comply with the 2018 General Data Protection Regulation (UK) and The Personal Information Protection Law (2021). Providing a service in alignment with these regulations means that:

  • Personal information which you share with a counsellor is kept confidential                                           

  • Counsellors will not disclose written or verbal information about you, or your contact with the University Counselling Service without your permission.

  • However if there is a situation of serious risk of harm to yourself or to others, information might need to be passed on to other appropriate professionals. Wherever possible this will be done with your consent.

  • Counsellors keep brief notes on counselling sessions in hard copy. These notes are kept in a locked filing cabinet to which only the counsellors have access. Your contact details are held electronically. Emails are also kept.  These records are held securely within the UCS for a maximum of 3 years now (7 years starting from February 2024) and then destroyed.

  • Anonymous statistical information is kept electronically and is used to help us provide an efficient service.
