27 March 2023
The Li Yip Yio Chin Scholarship was donated by Dr. Li Dak Sum and his wife Mrs. Li Yip Yio Chin. The Scholarship aims to award outstanding Gaokao students who have joined UNNC and show the values of honesty, trustworthiness, patriotism, innovation, diligence, and self-discipline. If the awardees meet the conditions for re-evaluation during their studies, the total scholarship amount will cover all tuition fees during their undergraduate studies. Recently, the Foundation interviewed three fourth year Li Yip Yio Chin Scholarship recipients, who are the above-mentioned outstanding students who receive full scholarships every year. Let's take a look at their stories!
Zhuoer Li is a senior student majoring in Mechanical Engineering from FoSE. She has been interested in materials science since early on, and her degree covers various courses such as materials science, material manufacturing, mechanical design, etc. Through her studies, Zhuoer has gained a more comprehensive understanding of the manufacture and application of materials, accumulated relevant scientific research experience, and laid a solid foundation for future study and research. Zhuoer actively participated in scientific research projects at UNNC, including her internship in the advanced composites research team. She particularly thanked Dr. Xiaoling Liu and Mr Xiaoye Cong from the advanced composites research team, who gave her many opportunities and meticulous guidance, allowing her to gradually accumulate a lot of professional skills and improve her basic understanding of scientific research. She said scientific research is more like a multi-faceted challenge that needs to be balanced. Although it is a very serious process, Zhuoer believes that scientific research can also be emotional. Enthusiasm and inspiration are both important throughout the procedure. Zhuoer enjoys the process of gaining inspiration through continuous learning and accumulation very much.
In terms of the future, Zhuoer is still in the process of exploring. She hopes that she can stay curious, and experience more meaningful moments. Professor Yang Xiaogang, her mentor in the High Flyer Scheme, once said, "As a scientific researcher, instead of burying your head in your own project, you actually need to look up, be aware of your responsibility to the environment and the society, try your best to make some positive changes to the world." As for Zhuoer’s next steps, she now intends to do research related to sustainable development and sustainable energy.
Zhuoer Li shared, “First of all, I am very grateful to Dr. Li Dak Sum and Mrs. Li Yip Yio Chin for their donations, and I also sincerely thank the university, the Faculty as well as the Foundation for their support to the students. This scholarship has given me the opportunity to come here, allowing me to enjoy rich academic resources and experience international education on this open, diverse and dynamic platform, which has laid a solid foundation for future study. This honour has always inspired me to constantly improve myself, pursue what I love, and stick to what I believe!”
Li Li is at UNNC studying International Business Economics. Li has had a meaningful and fulfilling four years here in Ningbo. During university, with her excellent academic performance and abundant social practice experiences, Li has won various scholarships, such as National Scholarship, Zhejiang Provincial Scholarship, President's Scholarship, and more. When she first entered the campus, Li quickly adapted to the brand-new English teaching environment, accumulated professional knowledge and skills and worked on critical thinking. In her third year, Li went to the University of Birmingham on the exchange, where she was immersed in a new learning environment and accelerated her personal development. She mentioned the Management course has given her a deeper understanding of the concept of sustainable development. Combining her previous internship experience in the Energy Research Institute, she has set her sights on her future research direction being in the field of sustainable development and energy environment.
On the topic of the open and inclusive platform of UNNC, Li participated in various activities to cultivate her organisational and leadership abilities. She always encourages herself to explore more and dare to make mistakes, enrich her experience through applied practice, and work on her confidence. Li has also tried many internships in different fields during her spare time. Each internship was a valuable experience for her, allowing her to deepen her own understanding of herself and clarify her future direction. She is very diligent and self-disciplined, able to plan well and work towards her goals.
Li said, “It is a great honour for me to receive the Li Yip Yio Chin Scholarship for four consecutive years. This is not only an affirmation of my four-year study, but also an encouragement for me to find my own motivation and value in continuous exploration. It was my first connection with UNNC and a memorable milestone in my university life. In the future, I will continue to forge ahead in the field I love, and make more contributions to society with the encouragement and expectation of UNNC, Dr. Li Dak Sum and Mrs. Li Yip Yio Chin!”
Shuyang Liang studies International studies in FHSS. He studies hard and plans his time effectively. During his first year, he momentarily hesitated when receiving a large number of English literature material. However, he quickly adjusted, and accumulated vocabulary and gradually improved his reading ability. Through being immersed in UNNC’s excellent learning atmosphere and the careful guidance of his teachers, his academic ability has rapidly improved. In his third year, Shuyang went to the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands on exchange, where he shared and experienced new ideas and thoughts with teachers and classmates from all over the world, which not only broadened Shuyang's academic horizons but also enriched his understanding of himself, others and the wider world. Through communication with his German friends, Shuyang was able to determine his future direction of study: world culture and history in Germany. Shuyang is very interested in the humanities and history of Ningbo as well, and makes his own contribution to the protection of Ningbo's historical and cultural heritage. He once went to Ningbo Tianyi Pavilion to serve as a volunteer guide, got close to Ningbo's historical and cultural heritage, and learned in-depth about Ningbo's history and culture. He is currently doing an internship in the "Digital Humanities Ningbo" project team at UNNC Library. The focus of his work is to digitise Ningbo's historical and cultural resources. During the internship, he applied what he learned through practice, and gained a new understanding of social history.
Shuyang Liang shared, “I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Li Dak Sum and Mrs. Li Yip Yio Chin for their generous support of us. It is my honour to be awarded the Li Yip Yio Chin Scholarship four times in a row. I would also like to thank all my teachers and classmates for their guidance, help and encouragement, which has brought me to where I am today. When I first joined the university, I shouldered the mission and responsibility brought to me by the scholarship. For me, it was both pressure and motivation. Over the past four years, I have studied hard, constantly exercised and improved myself, and developed in a well-rounded way. I really like my degree, where I can talk about the world, discuss life, and explore various possibilities with nice teachers and classmates. This journey at UNNC is my most precious experience, the most treasured wealth!”
