21 August 2022
As one of the charitable projects of the Education Foundation (EF) of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), the President Award of Outstanding Graduates was established by the UNNC President Yang Fujia to grant the outstanding graduates high graduation honors. Since the Award was established, a total of more than 50 outstanding undergraduate and master graduates have benefited. The Award provides strong proof for students through bonuses, certificates and recommendation letters from the President, enhancing their competitiveness in further studies and employment, and has a wide and far-reaching impact on the students.
In July 2022, the Education Foundation of UNNC interviewed He Ning, one of the winner of the President's Award of Outstanding Graduates, from the Nottingham University Business School China (NUBS China), majoring in International Business and Economics, to listen to her campus story.
He Ning gets excellent grades and has won many honors such as National Scholarship, Outstanding Graduate of Zhejiang Province in 2022, Zhejiang Province Scholarship, and President's Scholarship. In addition, she performs prominently in the extracurricular activities and she has interned in top investment companies, accounting firms and banks in different positions. He Ning has also achieved good results in the domestic and foreign academic competitions.
Talking about the fruitful college life, He Ning said that if she used key words to summarize herself, it would be " When water flows, a channel is formed". She mentioned: "UNNC provides optimal and the most convenient resources for students, allowing us to choose our own goals at different stages, such as participating in summer schools, applying for internships, preparing for language tests, etc. The development plans of UNNC students have been passed down, forming a virtuous circle. This inheritance has benefited me very much, and every small goal I have achieved has accumulated valuable wealth for myself. When I focus on the process of completing each stage of the plan carefully, various honors and awards will follow naturally. Of course, the honor is a kind of affirmation and encouragement to me, and it also makes me more determined to move towards the next goals.”
During the summer vacation of the freshman year, He Ning participated in the Summer School Programme of Peking University. As a business student, He Ning has recognized the importance of becoming a multi-talented person who is proficient in professional knowledge and data analysis capabilities. Therefore, she signed up for the summer school at Peking University to learn Python programming with the preeminent students from all over the country. In the end, she completed the programme with a good grade of A+. She said: "The summer school experience was very pleasant. I learned programming with students from different majors in various colleges and universities. What impressed me was that our group completed a large game project together. In the last session, each group made an English presentation report. Our group performed pretty well because there were several UNNC classmates in my group, we had fully exercised our presentation skills in the daily British class in UNNC. In the end, we perfectly presented the result developed and received positive feedbacks from the teachers and the classmates. I think it also shows the great help that the unique curriculum of UNNC has brought to the students."
He Ning believes that internship is a process of self-exploration, and students should have the courage to try as many internship positions as possible to find the career development direction they are really interested in.
During the freshman vacation, He Ning started her first internship experience in the Corporate Loan Department of a commercial bank in her hometown of Hangzhou. This internship allowed He Ning to connect the business theory she learned in UNNC with the actual business development situation. She found that the international industry integration course she studied was very useful in her internship in the evaluation of loans to local industries such as textile manufacturing. The courses set up by UNNC closely integrated theories with practice, enabling her to successfully complete the internship task and motivated her to devote more effort to the further study of business knowledge. During the summer of her sophomore year, He Ning came to an accounting firm for an internship, mainly responsible for the proofreading of financial reports. Through this internship, He Ning gained a certain understanding of auditing work. She realized that becoming an accountant requires a serious and meticulous work attitude. At the same time, she also carried this habit into her junior year.
By the summer of junior year, He Ning had gradually accumulated a solid theoretical knowledge of business. She came to Shanghai as an intern in the M&A department of the top investment firm IDG Capital. Here, He Ning intuitively saw the current situation of financial practitioners and the financial market. She said: “I found that there is no shortage of capital in the current market, and people need to seize investment opportunities with potential and development in a timely manner. I am very impressed by the 24-hour readiness of my colleagues in the financial industry. The one-month high-intensity internship experience allowed me to quickly master the skills of industry analysis and enterprise analysis, and these skills were greatly benefited in my CFA challenge. "
In September 2021, He Ning and other four students from NUBS China were selected through campus interviews to represent UNNC in the CFA Institute Research Challenge. The CFA Institute Investment Analysis Challenge is an all-English analysis and research competition for financial students in colleges and universities around the world. Every year, the world's top universities are invited to participate in the competition. So far, it has successfully attracted more than 900 institutions from 91 countries to participate.
He Ning introduced: "The competition was divided into two stages. In the first stage of the preliminary competition, we need complete the stock valuation of the target company based on information such as the company's annual report, stock market trend, industry trends and competing companies. My teammates and I went through hard working day and night, we submitted a 30-page enterprise research report in English. With this report, we stood out from 26 teams from 16 colleges and universities in the Yangtze River Delta region and successfully advanced to the finals in Shanghai. The second stage of the finals was conducted online and the judges rated the contestants according to the speech videos and the performance of the on-site defense. In the end, we won the Outstanding Performance Award in the final of the CFA Institute Investment Analysis Challenge in Shanghai.”
He Ning believes that the professional advantages of the UNNC international business economics she has learned are fully reflected in business practice. She said: "Throughout the course of the competition, I learned how to analyze the framework and rationalize the logic. At the same time, I deepened the advanced use of Microsoft software and databases, and I learned to better search, filter and receive information. More importantly, I am very grateful to the mentor's careful guidance and the team's cooperation, so that I can successfully complete the competition."
This fall, He Ning will go to the UK to further her study at the world's top university - the London School of Economics and Political Science, and start a new journey. He Ning would like to share her experience with the younger students who are about to enter UNNC: The first point is to preview and review the class. The curriculum of UNNC is closely related with each other, and students shall learn to integrate and deepen the understanding of the profession; The second point is to overcome anxiety. Freshmen may feel at a loss when faced with a new environment and a variety of information. We shall believe in our own potential, and accomplish every goal according to our plan. Just like “when water flowed, the channel is formed”, once we stick to each goal, to harvest success must be a matter of course.
As for UNNC, He Ning is full of blessings. She said: "Thanks to the University for everything that is given to me, here I continue to grow and complete my transformation. At the same time, I would like to thank the Education Foundation, the various charitable projects launched by whom such as scholarships have brought me endless confidence. I am honored to receive the President’s Award of Outstanding Graduates, and I have gained the motivation for continuous improvement. In the future I will also live up to the UNNC’s training.
Regarding President Yang's sad passing, He Ning said with sorrow, "Every UNNC students once had the honor to hear President Yang's teachings at the opening ceremony, and his words still inspire me now. UNNC founded by President Yang made me feel that "University changed my life", and it guided me on a development path that I had never thought of. The knowledge I have gained in the past four years is inspiring. I also thanks to President Yang for his "Liberal Arts Education", I feel that the University is not only a place to impart knowledge, but also to cultivate morality. Finally, I would like to sincerely express my memoriam and gratitude to President Yang, and I will always remember and practice his principle of being a man first, studying second."
