Lin Yang: a happy journey started from UNNC
09 October 2022
In 2018, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China Education Foundation (EFUNNC) launched the Guizhou Dream Scheme. It was launched firstly in response to the call of the Party Central Committee for action to target the alleviation of poverty, secondly in order to help students from low income families in Guizhou Province enjoy access to high-quality education at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). UNNC Academic Services Office, Department of Campus Life, Admissions and Career Development Office, Education Foundation and other departments have shown their people-oriented spirit caring for and assisting the 9 beneficiary students. The teachers from these departments have given full support to beneficiary students through further communication and talks and active encouragement, providing professional and diverse support in the students’ study, life and career planning.
Now the fourth year of the project has come around, the Education Foundation was proud to interview one of the Dream Scheme beneficiary students, Lin Yang, a 20-year-old girl who is from Bijie, Guizhou province. In August this year, Lin graduated from the UNNC International Communication (IC) department and now she is working for a culture communication company in Ningbo. We chatted to Lin about her inspiration, and her journey from her hometown to UNNC, funded by the Dream Scheme in 2018.
Lin was born in a small village in Guizhou province, in south China. In 2018 when she was in grade 12, she started searching for funded educational opportunities in order to support her family’s financial situation and to further her university study. She soon found on the website that UNNC had created the Dream Scheme, a charitable programme to support qualified Guizhou students who met specific Gaokao grades and with a low family income to study at UNNC. The Dream Scheme fully covers their tuition fees, book fees and accommodation fees with a total four -year amount of 480,000 yuan per student.
Lin said: “As I searched more information about the university, the strong academic atmosphere and the modern facilities in the campus deeply attracted me. I was determined to apply for this fund and submitted my application to the Education Foundation. Later I was very delighted to be informed that I was eligible. In July I got my Gaokao results and I was accepted by UNNC. Since then, I have experienced a brand-new life in UNNC.
Lin felt that the university took the students of the Dream Scheme very seriously even before the start of the semester. She said: "A teacher came to visit my home to learn about my family. Considering that my family might not afford to buy me a computer for the first semester, the teacher specially left me ten thousand RMB, which made me feel very welcome. After communicating with me, the teacher said that my personality was optimistic and free, and I was very suitable to go to UNNC. After the first term started, I felt more and more attracted by the unique charm of UNNC. I remember that UNNC organised a freshman dance during i-week (the first week). I was completely immersed in the atmosphere of freedom and happiness in a beautiful dress. I had never learned dance professionally before, but I was finally selected as the best dancer. It made me happy."
Lin studied International Communications (IC), a programme within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS). IC provides students with an opportunity to study a wide range of subjects, including contemporary mass media, journalism, new digital communications and the history of European and American societies, etc. In order to help the students to adapt to the language environment, academic English language learning sessions were scheduled by IC, and some professional courses were also made available. Lin elaborated: "From our sophomore year, we learned a second foreign language, which included German, French, Japanese, Spanish and Korean. I chose Korean as my second foreign language. The Korean teacher was very conscientious, responsible and amiable, and learning Korean was a joy. I paid much attention to managing my time when I studied so that I could cope with all the assignments and examinations in an organised manner. Despite of the academic pressure, the teachers’ support and my self-discipline helped me graduate smoothly.”
In addition to academic life, Lin was also happy with UNNC's facilities: "Our dormitory had no curfew, and there was 24-hour electricity and hot water. Plenty of washing machines, dryers, and water coolers were also made available. Compared with most other domestic colleges and universities, UNNC was also less restrictive and more welcoming in its dormitory management, which was ideal for me. UNNC’s logistics department was also kind to the students of Dream Scheme, they topped up 300 RMB to our meal cards every month. I also liked UNNC’s library very much. In my freshman year, I often enjoyed studying late at the old library. Later, the university built a newer, more modern library with increased study space capacity. During exam week, the library opened a 24-hour self-study area for everyone to study late if needed. In addition, the library also had an exhibition area. I liked to visit after studying."
Lin liked to play sports in her spare time. She often went to the gym and participated in marathon races. In Lin’s junior year, she applied for Decathlon's internship because of her interests on sports. She said that the internship was very enjoyable, and she learned a lot about sports while experiencing a work environment. She said: "When I was looking for a job in my senior year, the staff from the Career Office contacted me enthusiastically and said that she could provide job search suggestions and help with revising my CV. At that time, I did not have a very clear goal for my career, but I always prioritised my love of the role and happiness when finding a job. When I was doing an assignment for my course during the second semester of my senior year, I published original content on my social media account which attracted 8,000 subscribers in just one month. Through this assignment I found my interest and potential in working in new media. After graduation, I found a social media job in a cultural communication company in Ningbo, and now I am very satisfied with my work. "
At the end of the interview, Lin said that she was very grateful for the Dream Scheme, which completely changed her life. She said: "If it wasn't for the cooperation between UNNC and Guizhou, maybe students like me would never be able to walk out of the mountains during their lifetime. UNNC's unique openness and inclusiveness have had a profound impact upon me as I experienced a different approach to learning in China. Most importantly, UNNC made me accept myself more. I have always been an optimistic person. After I came to UNNC, I met many warm teachers and made many good friends. I became a more optimistic and happier person at UNNC where I felt a lot of love. Living in the moment, being free and open minded, cherishing what I own now and and giving back to society in the future is my biggest gain from my time at UNNC. Thanks to UNNC, this world has one more happy person because of the Dream Scheme.
