The School of Economics is pleased to announce a new summer school programme in Applied Economics for 2026. The programme is designed for students who want to strengthen their empirical skills and gain hands-on experience working with different types of data and methodologies.
This course is ideal for students in Economics, Finance, and other related disciplines who aim to:
- Enhance their methodological and practical skills in working with data
- Pursue further study or career development in Economics or Finance
- Become better researchers
- Engage in in-depth discussions about their ideas with experts in the field

Programme Content
The course will take place over a three-weeks period and is divided into two broad parts:
A. The first two weeks combine lectures and practical sessions on core and more advanced topics in applied economics. Participants will be introduced to typical datasets and databases used in economic research and learn how to work with them effectively using their preferred statistical software (STATA or R). Topics include:
- Causal inference - experimental vs. non-experimental approaches
- Household decision making and household survey data
- Programming and data analysis in R
- Spatial data and econometrics (GeoDa)
- Surveys and survey experiments
- Finance and Regional Economic Databases in China
- What makes a good research question
B. In the third week, students apply what they have learned by working on a group research project in their area of interest. Student are assigned to a faculty supervisor who provides guidance throughout the week.

**Participants typically spend the whole afternoon working on their projects. Depending on need, they may also meet their supervisors again in the afternoon.

Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of microeconomics, econometrics, and data-analysis is expected. Intermediate courses in microeconomics and econometrics are recommended.
- The typical participant has finished their third year of study in Economics or International Trade at UNNC. Students from other majors as well as final-year students are suitable and most welcome.
- Students from other universities are welcome to apply and experience the unique, international teaching style of UNNC (for students on 3-year programmes, we recommend having completed at least 2 years)
- A high level of English proficiency is expected, as the course is taught entirely in English and students are required to present their work on multiple occasions.
Instructors
Dr. Jan Jozwik
Doctor Jan Jozwik is a member of the Centre for Decision Research and Experimental Economics (CeDEx) China. His main research interests lie in experimental economics, development economics, and applied microeconometrics. Jan’s research in experimental economics is based on lab experiments and artefactual field experiments conducted in China, the UK and Ghana. At the UNNC he is the module convenor for the postgraduate module Applied Behavioural Economics and for the undergraduate module Advanced Development Economics. Jan is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy/Advance HE.
Dr. Xuyan Lou
Lou joined the school of Economics in 2018 as an Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. She received her Ph.D. in Economics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2018. Her primary research field is labor economics, covering education, marriage, and intra-household issues.
Dr. Marcus Roel
Dr Marcus Roel's research focuses on combining theoretical and practical approaches to understanding human motivation and behaviour. Prior to joining the University of Nottingham Ningbo, he taught at Beijing Normal University for five years.
Dr. Long Wen
Long Wen joined the School of Economics as an Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China in February 2020 after working as a post doctor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research interests include Econometrics, Tourism Economics and Computational Finance.
Dr. Chunfei Weng
Chuiwei Weng was graduated as PhD from University of Nottingham Ningbo, China. Her research focuses on the transition to clean energy and the design of environmental policies for sustainable economic development. She utilizes techniques such as spatial econometrics and non-linear ARDL in her work.
Dr. Shuo Yang
Shuo Yang is an Assistant Professor in School of Economics at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. In his research, he applies experimental and behavioral approaches to study topics in labor economics, public economics, health economics, and development economics. His research has been published in economics journals, including Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics. Dr. Yang received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Texas at Dallas.
Dr. Xiaoyu Zhang
Xiaoyu is an Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. Previously, he taught at Shanghai International Studies University as an Assistant Professor. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His primary research fields are financial economics, institutional economics, and real estate economics.

CeDEx China is an offshoot of the Centre for Decision Research and Experimental Economics (CeDEx), a world-leading research group based within the School of Economics at the University of Nottingham (UK) (ranked second in Europe and fifth in the world for experimental economics). It investigates human decision-making using theoretical and experimental methods.
The CeDEx China organizes activities in the following three areas.
- Research: It brings together researchers from all three faculties of UNNC and around the world to conduct state-of-the-art research in Behavioral Economics, Decision Theory, Economic Psychology and related areas.
- Public Engagement: It promotes empirically motivated policy implications that are relevant to both the domestic and international contexts.
- Education: It offers the opportunity to UNNC students to participate in research projects and provide them with quality training delivered by experts in their respective fields.The CeDEx China currently comprises of 35 members - 10 academic staff from the School of Economics, 5 PhD students from the school of Economics, 20 external members (from within and outside UNNC).
