The Story of a Section.

14 April 2022

The Department of Architecture and Built Environment hosted Dr Michele Bonino, Associate professor of Architecture and Urban Design, and Rector’s Delegate for relations with China and Asian countries at the Politecnico di Torino (Italy) as part of the ABE Talk initiative within the Architectural Design Studio, on May 12th 2022.

Dr Bonino addressed a very relevant theme to achieve a sustainable Chinese urban development: how to renovate and re-use industrial heritage sites for contemporary events while enhancing physical well-being, sports, and sociality. The talk, entitled The Story of a Section. Designing the Shougang Oxygen Factory for Beijing 2022, was focused on the entire design process carried on by Politecnico di Torino with Tsinghua University and its Design Institute (THAD; TeamMinus) to transform an old oxygen factory into the Visitor Center of the Shougang Olympic site, where the Big Air competitions of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics took place.

Thanks to a clear and detailed illustration of the various project phases, from concept to completion, including the continuous dialogue with the government and the local partners, Dr Bonino, who led the design team, stressed the importance of building re-use and flexible design solutions to envision sustainable urban scenarios for our cities through a holistic and interdisciplinary approach.
