As the first Sino-foreign cooperative university in China and a leader in international higher education innovation, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) has established the “Liberal Arts Scholarship”, including “Li Yip Yio Chin Scholarship” and “Excellent Freshmen Scholarship”, to select outstanding students with outstanding college entrance examination scores and excellent performance after enrollment.
The Li Yip Yio Chin Scholarship
The Li Yip Yio Chin Scholarship was established in 2008 by Dr Li Dak Sum and his wife Mrs Li Yip Yio Chin. Dr Li Dak Sum is a well-known patriot and successful businessman from the Ningbo. The scholarship aims to reward outstanding students who are honest, academically excellent, patriotic, hardworking and disciplined, have innovative spirit, critical thinking, dare to challenge themselves, and have great development potential. In academic year 2023/24, a total of nine students were evaluated and awarded the Li Yip Yio Chin Scholarship, Li Yip Yio Chin Full Scholarship, Li Yip Yio Chin Half Scholarship, or Li Yip Yio Chin Scholarship Second Prize (the names of the awards vary depending on the students’ year of enrollment). Since its establishment, more than 100 outstanding students have been honoured with this prestigious award.
Excellent Freshmen Scholarship
The Excellent Freshmen Scholarship was established in 2022 by the UNNC Education Foundation to reward outstanding students with excellent college entrance examination scores and great performance in various aspects after enrollment, as well as innovative and exploratory spirit. In academic year 2023/24, seven students were awarded the Excellent Freshmen Scholarship’s Gold prize, and 16 students were awarded the Scholarship’s Silver prize.

As the recipient of the four-year Li Yip Yio Chin Full Scholarship, I am honoured to be recognised by the UNNC Education Foundation, and I am also very glad that I chose UNNC as my undergraduate school. In the past four years, both my academic prowess and my thinking and cognitive level have been improved. I have grown a lot compared with myself when I first entered the University. Here, I would like to express my special appreciation to my parents who have always offered me understanding and support, as well as to my teachers who have been so responsible to me and have taught me, guided me tirelessly. This scholarship has been very effective in supporting my financial needs while attending university, but it has also put a great deal of pressure on me to succeed in my studies. However, to this day, I have overcome the pressure and have grown into a more mature and complete person.
