Luxi Cai, second year International Business Management student won Dream Scholarship Individual Award

In September 2021, Luxi Cai (Lucy) first arrived at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). At UNNC, she jumped out of her comfort zone and enthusiastically faced a brand-new learning and living environment, where curiosity and enthusiasm for embracing a new life could be unleashed. During her first year, Lucy joined the Vis-à-Vis (VAV), UNNC's most established cross-cultural platform and one of the oldest student organisations. VAV hosts a variety of multicultural exchange activities such as V-Ball, Show night, and 5-HT Week. ‘Although I have only stayed in VAV for one year, I am fortunate to meet so many like-minded friends here, and I have learned a lot of new knowledge and accumulated valuable experience in the process of working together. VAV makes me feel welcome and included, and I will continue to pass on this energy’, said Lucy.

Lucy also serves as the deputy foreign minister of UNNC Campus Ambassador, which is a brand new experience for her. Campus Ambassador is a student organisation responsible for providing campus tours to guests and hosting various meaningful campus activities. At Campus Ambassador, Lucy gains a deeper understanding of the culture and history of the university and immerses herself in the cross-overs and integration of diverse cultures on campus. 'The slogan of the campus ambassador is My campus, my focus, I will share the history and culture I know about UNNC with each guest, hoping to pass on UNNC's campus spirit to everyone, and help them feel a part of UNNC’s vision and mission', said Lucy.

In the process of learning and living at UNNC, Lucy also takes the initiative to enrich her knowledge. She interned in the Introduction to Chinese Language Research Group organised by the Teaching and Research Office for Chinese Culture, which is a course that introduces Chinese culture to foreign students. Assisting teachers in course managing and arranging the after-school courses is a practical experience for volunteers like Lucy to further understand cultural exchange and different expressions of communication. In addition, Lucy also took the X-Culture course offered by NUBS (China), which was attended by college students from many universities in China and abroad. Lucy said that through the course, she really gained an understanding of cultural differences, and that sincere communication and knowledge exchange is key to solving cultural differences.

During her first year summer holidays, Lucy participated in the Summer Seeding Programme and went to the island in nearby Xiangshan, Ningbo to teach young students. Together with fellow international students, the team curated a series of themed volunteer courses, including culture, geography, music, art, science, sports and more. She said 'As a university student, I hope that our time here can leave the children with a different experience and memories, while sowing the seeds of exploration in their hearts'.

Lucy often takes part in activities held by the university, including providing interpretation for international students in the lectures on traditional Chinese Culture and Confucianism. Despite limited preparation time, Lucy’s knowledge and translation ability shone, and won unanimous praise from the audience. She is also one of the regular hosts of the library podcast Shuffle. This project invites guests from different fields and backgrounds to share their thoughts on music, art, history etc. In addition, Lucy also joined the UNNC football team and participated in the Zhejiang University Sports Games. 'I have been interested in football since I was a child, but never had the opportunity to participate in learning more and proper training. I am grateful to the captain, who is also my best friend, for having me on the team and allowing me to pursue my love of football here', said Lucy.

Lucy has been participating in Model United Nations competitions since high school. This March, she will travel to the United Nations in Vienna, Austria. As one of the Chinese representatives, Lucy will participate in the 2023 United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Youth Forum. During her preparation, Lucy studied a lot of information related to fighting against drugs, gaining understanding of real-life examples, and even interviewing people who quietly contributed to the anti-drug cause. She integrates this professional knowledge and practical experience, adding her own understanding and interpretation, and fully demonstrated this during the selection process. Lucy specifically thanks her friends, the university, the government authorities and those working to fight against drugs for their full support of her journey, giving her the opportunity to stand on an international platform and speak out about China's anti-drug campaign.

Every day at UNNC, Lucy has a full schedule. While completing her coursework, she continues to explore and challenge herself through extracurricular activities. 'We have so many opportunities to try new things and improve ourselves during our university study. I will always try my best when I have a goal, so that there will be no regrets left for my future self. My friends always describe me as a girl who never stops. They always find me busy doing something or on the way to do something. And that’s who I am, I am like a kite, flying when the wind comes. It’s the wind that gives the kite the motivation to dance. For me, I need stimulation from the outside world to keep me thinking and moving. That’s why I try to always keep myself busy. Constantly learning knowledge and gaining experience makes me feel fulfilled, and I have benefitted a lot from cultural exchange and communication'.

Lucy feels honoured to receive the Dream Scholarship Individual Award. Culture is one of her favourite topics. 'UNNC gives me great opportunities to explore cultures that I have never experienced first-hand, or even imagined. I cherish the warmth and inspiration I feel through it. I have a humble dream, to open a small coffee shop in my hometown. There will be a wall filled with the photos I have taken, a lot of paintings I have drawn, and coffee beans I have collected from all around the world. This dream guides me along my road of life. As long as we experience the wonderful journey, the destination will then be meaningful', said Lucy.

'Not all people have a clearly defined dream, but as you stay curious, and enthusiastic, and try to do more, you are already on the way to making a dream come true'. Lucy said, sentiments she often uses to encourage herself. We sincerely hope that she can continue her journey towards her dreams.
