The FoSE Student Extra-curriculum Programme is one of the flagship initiatives at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Nottingham Ningbo China. Running twice annually—during the semester and summer—the programme offers students a rich blend of research practice, core skills training, and cultural experiences. It is designed to help science and engineering students enhance their skills, broaden their knowledge, and cultivate their personal development beyond the classroom.

Research Practice
This initiative provides a premier platform for undergraduate students to engage in research. Each year, faculty supervisors offer hundreds of interdisciplinary research projects, attracting hundreds of FoSE undergraduates. Students gain hands-on experience across all stages of research, deepen their understanding of academic inquiry, and connect with the wider research community at UNNC. Over the past decade, nearly 5,000 students have participated, significantly enhancing their research and innovation capabilities.

Training
FoSE is committed to fostering holistic student development. Beyond regular coursework, the Faculty supports students in building key competencies through targeted training sessions, including Advanced Applied Engineering Projects, AI Foundation Training, Presentation Skills, and Career Development Guidance—all aimed at expanding students' knowledge and practical abilities.
Cultural Experience
Leveraging the Yangming Culture Study Base (located at Wang Yangming's former residences in Yuyao and Xiuwen, Guizhou), FoSE organises the annual "Gezhu" Cultural Study activity during the summer. From Gezhu 1.0 to Gezhu 5.0, students from diverse academic backgrounds come together to explore topics blending Eastern and Western philosophies, traditional craftsmanship, and modern technology. In recent years, the programme has integrated contemporary themes such as artificial intelligence with Yangming Culture, using AI to bring new life to this historical heritage and fostering interdisciplinary innovation.
External Research Placement
For several years, FoSE has partnered with leading national research institutes to offer students diverse external research opportunities. Each summer, students have the chance to join research groups at partner institutions, conducting research placements under expert supervision. This experience further develops their research capabilities and enriches their academic portfolios.
