Discovering a sustainable future

Energy production must change if we are to tackle climate change and pollution-related health problems. From researching low carbon planning initiatives in China, to developing clean coal technology, our pioneering research will power the future of China and beyond.

Joining forces with global institutions, industry and governments, we will pioneer a cleaner, healthier future.

Addressing air pollution

China is the world’s largest consumer of coal, burning billions of tonnes each year, which has a detrimental effect on the environment and public health. Our researchers are rethinking the way in which we exploit our coal reserves and produce innovations that will improve energy efficiency. Pioneering the removal of mercury from coal-fired power stations, and developing first of its kind coal gasification technology are just two of the ways in which we are working to reduce air pollution to improve the lives of millions of people across China.

The rise of the smart eco-city

Working collaboratively, our political ecologists are leading the way to tackle pollution in some of China’s biggest cities. This is part of a wider project which is the first of its kind to provide the first comparative analysis of the green economy, particularly smart city and eco-initiatives in China and Europe.
