Graduate Teaching Assistants or Graduate Research Assistants

PhD students have the opportunity to work as graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) or graduate research assistants (GRAs) in the school/department. All available opportunities will be advertised on the Student Portal.

To qualify as a GTA, PhD students must complete a mandatory three-day training session provided by the Centre for English Language Education. This hands-on training is designed to familiarize PhD students with basic pedagogical theories and enhance their teaching techniques, preparing them for their teaching responsibilities. GTA training is available for sign-up every semester.

The training will be divided into two phases:

  1. Oral Language Testing: Applicants whose first language is not English are required to first pass an English language test. Candidates’ suitability for the GTA role will be assessed in terms of their general English language proficiency. The four evaluative criteria are as follows: fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
  2. Training Sessions: All applicants must attend an intensive three-day training course and pass the final examination to obtain a GTA certificate.

Those who successfully complete the GTA training programme will be considered GTA candidates. For more details, please visit the GTA training page on Moodle.

Please note that PhD students can only work as a GTA or GRA from their second year onwards.
