Abstract:

The growth of K-Film, K-Dramas and K-Pop, Korean Popular culture – often known as Hallyu – has offered one of the first distinctly Asian modern global entertainment models, and one that continues to enjoy a strong international presence today. Yet the ‘Korean Wave’ is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon closely related to Korea’s economic boom and miracle growth, with wide reaching, and sometimes surprising, consequences. This lecture will chart the evolution of Hallyu since the early 2000s, addressing its various incarnations and the mixed reception to these products. Initially dismissed as a temporary regional incarnation, the lecture will address how the Korean entertainment industries defied expectations to become one of the defining features of global 21st century pop culture.
