Course overview

This course equips students with a solid understanding of how firms and entrepreneurs make economic decisions within real-world business environments, and how such decisions shape broader economic and societal outcomes. Students develop analytical skills through training in micro- and macroeconomic theory, data analysis, international trade and investment, business strategy, and market competition.

Unlike traditional Economics courses, which emphasise modelling and theoretical formulation, this course focuses on the practical application of economic principles to international business contexts. It adopts a firm-level perspective, integrating core economic knowledge with management and international business insights, helping students understand how companies navigate complex global markets and policy environments.

The interdisciplinary and applied nature of this course prepares graduates for a wide range of careers in multinational corporations, policy think tanks, financial institutions, and consulting firms, particularly in roles related to economic analysis, strategy, and market forecasting. It also offers a strong foundation for pursuing postgraduate study in international economics, applied economics, or business-related disciplines.

Special features

  • A degree with enormous prestige in economics combined with management or other areas of business
  • Develops a theoretical understanding of economic issues in China with a focus on modern business and its operating environment

Course structure

The degree is offered as a three or four-year course depending on your entry qualification.

For domestic students the course structure follows the Chinese higher education system and is based on a four-year course. For international students, with relevant qualifications, the course structure follows the UK higher education system and is based on a three-year course.

Note: Course structures may be subject to change. The final version will be confirmed by the commencement of each academic year in September. For the most up-to-date and detailed course structure, please refer to the online course catalogue.

Additional Module Choice Information for Part I

Students must complete 120 credits with at least 90 credits at level 2 or above.

Although 60 credits per semester is the normal allocation, University rules permit 70 credits in one semester and 50 in the other. This variation from the norm requires careful consideration, and it is sensible to seek advice. Where either semester is undertaken away from UNNC on exchange, the plan for the year requires the Exchange Coordinator’s approval since exchange partners may not permit the arrangement.

Additional Module Choice Information for Part II

In addition to the listed modules, the following modules will also be offered.

In Autumn semester:

BUSI3223 Global Business Engagement_Autumn (compensatable, 10 credits, with limited capacity)

In Spring semesters:

BUSI3224 Global Business Engagement_Spring (compensatable, 10 credits, with limited capacity)

Part II students must select at least 100 credits at level 3 or above within 120 credits.

UG Dissertation is a non-compensatable module. A student who fails a non-compensatable module will not complete that stage without successfully undertaking re-assessment in that module.

Additional Module Choice Information for all years

Module availability on non-compulsory modules is subject to timetabling and pre-requisite restrictions.

Students must take 120 credits. Although 60 credits per semester is the normal allocation, University rules permit 70 credits in one semester and 50 in the other. This variation from the norm requires careful consideration and it is sensible to seek advice.

Optional modules with insufficient demand may be withdrawn from the list of options at short notice, and students will need to select alternative modules. Where this does occur, the University will try to give early notification of any changes in order minimise their impact.
