8 March is International Women’s Day (IWD), on which the major contributions of women are celebrated at UNNC. This year, in addition to IWD, we will celebrate Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Week in the week commencing 3 – 9 March 2025, with a series of events to foster a deeper understanding of diversity, promote disability inclusion and enhance the wellbeing of our UNNC community.

As society continues to evolve, the momentum for gender equality is unstoppable. In celebration of International Women’s Day, we are honored to host a panel discussion featuring esteemed UNNC leaders. Join us as we listen to a group of distinguished women leaders share their remarkable accomplishments and insights on the state of women in leadership today.
The session will begin with a keynote titled “Why Accelerating Action is Crucial for Research and Science,” which will explore the importance of gender diversity in academia and the practical steps institutions and individuals can take to accelerate progress towards more inclusive and representative research. Through the following leadership journey sharing and engaging forum, we will delve into topics such as gender parity and progress, challenges in leadership, and advice for future leaders.
By exploring the experiences and perspectives of these leaders, we can reflect on how these issues shape our own lives and consider actionable steps to address them.

About the Guest Speaker
Dr. Roshni Mooneeram, Honorary Associate Professor of the University of Nottingham played a leadership role in the set-up stage of UNNC from 2007-2012. For the last 12 years, she has worked in the field of EDI, including as the Director of EDI at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and at the European Molecular Biology Lab. She now works as a global consultant in EDI working mostly with European Union institutions and science research organisations. She is the director of 1 World Consultancy and sits on a number of EDI Boards in Europe. She is at UNNC as Scholar in Residence, collaborating with the Sino-European Keylab of International Studies.
Anti-Sexual Harassment Public talk

Sexual harassment can occur in any setting, can cause conflict and hostility, and can involve both men and women. We offer a practical session on sexual harassment prevention. The purpose of this session is to give students an opportunity to understand sexual harassment, to identify inappropriate behaviour that constitutes sexual harassment, to learn how to deal with issues related to the topic and to avoid misunderstandings, especially in different cultural and social contexts.

About the Speaker
Lily did her PhD with the School of Education, University of Nottingham in Internationalisation of Higher Education prior to taking up a lectureship in English for Academic Purposes at the Southern University of Science and Technology China (SUSTech). Apart from teaching, she has completed several research projects in higher education management and leadership, international schooling and special education.
Before joining SGI, Lily was the Manager for Researcher Training and Development (PhD Trainer) at UNNC and with the Graduate School she trained more than 500 PhD students over a period of six years. Drawing on her previous teaching and research experience in different academic contexts and cultural settings she now focuses on language center management and research in language and identity, cultural studies, and social justice in education.
The project “Preventative Guidelines Against Sexual Harassment on Multi-Cultural Campuses” started in the summer of 2018 and aimed at helping students and staff better understand potential issues and risks related to sexual harassment. The published paper was titled Sexual Harassment on International Brach Campuses: Awareness, Perception, and Prevention with the addition of talks and workshops to students and staff to raise awareness on prevention as well as to inform our community on protection and support.
Inclusive Teaching Guide Introduction

This workshop introduces participants to the concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and their significance in higher education. Participants will explore the UNNC Inclusive Teaching Guide and broader principles of inclusive pedagogy. The workshop features presentations by current and former EDI committee members who bring expertise in inclusive education. Through hands-on activities, participants will engage in reflective practice to deepen their understanding of inclusive teaching methods.

Multicultural Carnival

UNNC promotes an international community with a variety of countries and cultures represented by staff and students. To embrace and value the rich diversity of staff and students across campus, this event aims to provide a platform for participants to build friendships and experience diversity by participating in interactive activities from different cultural spheres. Feminist Film Screening-Black Box Dairies
Date and Time: 6-8.30pm, Wednesday 5 March

Join us for a screening of the powerful documentary Black Box Diaries by Shiori Itō, followed by a discussion that delves into the key themes explored in the film. This session aims to foster a deeper understanding of the long history of feminist ideologies and movements in East Asia, with a focus on the intersection of patriarchy and feminist resistance. The film is a documentary based on investigative journalism analysing a high-profile rape case in Japan, written by the victim, Shiori Itō. The session will be facilitated by Jessica Hatrick, Teaching Fellow in International Communications.

Inclusive Experience Workshop

UNNC aims to create an inclusive and equitable teaching and learning environment for the benefit of all students. You may have encountered students with disabilities around you, or you may have a disability yourself; this workshop will explore how to provide or access the right support so that we can all flourish as independent learners.

About the Speaker
Jean has a Master’s of Applied Management Theory from the University of Glasgow, UK and a Master’s of Special Education Needs/Additional Learning Needs from the University of South Wales, UK. She is a Registered Fellow of Educational Therapists (Asia), a member of the National Association of Disability Practitioners CIC, UK, a National Level Three psychological consultant, China and a UNNC EDI representative. She has 15 years of experience in providing support to students with all kinds of disabilities in higher education, including giving screenings to dyslexia, ADHD and ASD students, making alternative exam arrangements, and providing time management and other learning skills support. She also has over 10 years’ experience in offering training in general disability awareness, how to support students with mental health difficulties, dyslexia, ADHD, ASD and other learning differences, inclusive teaching strategies to academic staff, and beyond.
Movie Screening- CODA (Deaf Culture & Sign language)

CODA (Best Picture 2022) is a comedy-drama written and directed by Sian Heder. The film follows Ruby, a 17-year-old girl who is the only hearing member of her deaf family – a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults). Ruby balances her responsibilities as an interpreter for her parents and working on their fishing boat with her passion for singing, which she discovers when she joins her high school choir.
Featuring powerful performances from a cast of deaf actors, CODA offers a unique perspective on the Deaf community and the invaluable experiences of CODAs. Through its touching narrative and the beauty of sign language, the film highlights themes of family, identity, and self-discovery.

The Psychology of Lifespan Health and Wellbeing

Health and wellbeing are essential components of an inclusive EDI framework. This seminar will provide a broad overview of the important work psychologists are doing in this field, highlighting key research and practical applications.
This seminar will provide an introduction to the topic of psychological health and wellbeing. We will approach it from an academic perspective, to consider how the subject is studied academically and the ways in which the results have applied consequences for practitioners. Each stage of the lifespan has unique challenges and opportunities, so we will take a very broad, lifespan perspective, considering everything from the health and wellbeing of an expectant mother to factors that are important in older adulthood.

About the Speaker
Catriona Morrison is the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She obtained her MA from the University of Glasgow and DPhil from the University of York, specializing in Psychology. Her research interests are diverse and her publications include topics such as language development, dementia, internet behaviour, and childhood and adult memories.
Professor Morrison is passionate about learning and teaching and is a past Chair of the British Psychological Society’s Education Board. She is a Chartered Psychologist and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.

Campus Run in Colour

Venue: Athletics Track
On Saturday morning, the weekly campus run will take place as part of EDI Week to celebrate the diversity we have on campus and to promote inclusivity. The event will take place at the athletics track at 8:30am. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, everyone is welcome to participate and enjoy the journey. You will also be covered from head to toe in a different coloured powder at various points along the Campus Run route (don't worry, it's non-toxic and easy to wash off). After the run, all participants will receive a free coffee from Trio.
Girls' Night In

To celebrate International Women's Day and embrace gender equity, we are once again hosting our popular Girls' Night In. The Girls' Night In event was launched at UNUK in 2015 to give women the chance to try different sports in a more relaxed environment, make new friends, improve their health and build their confidence to take part in activities outside their comfort zone. Since then, thousands of University of Nottingham students have taken part in Girls' Night In. In response to the theme, the Sports Department will offer a wide range of sports activities to encourage women to explore their potential in sports and expand their social network.
Art Exhibition - “Her Comedy”

The world is increasingly recognising the creativity of women as the energy of female artists continues to grow. Through their work, female artists share creative experiences, thoughts and expressions on gender relations and the beauty of the female body.
This year we are thrilled to present the work of Juee, ‘Her Comedy’ showcaseing a collection of paintings that draw inspiration from the free imagination of daily life and inner feelings. Blurring the lines between figurative and abstract, her paintings offer a unique escape, inviting audiences to release stress and embrace the pursuit of spiritual pleasure. Through the extension of the illustration story of the girl with candy teeth, Juee hopes to convey the energy of happiness and relaxation.

About the Artist
Xiaojue JU (Juee) is an independent illustrator who now lives in Shanghai. She has held solo and group exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other cities.
Inspired by daily life and inner feelings, her paintings burst with vivid colors and a captivating, bizarre style, demonstrating a keen perception of emotions. Moreover, her vibrant and imaginative style invites viewers into a world of pure joy and introspection.
