Further Requirements:
Teaching Experience: Applicants to the MA TESOL are not formally required to have prior teaching experience, although such experience is naturally considered useful, and can help in providing students with a more immediate and practical context when reflecting on the course content. All applicants accepted onto the MA TESOL are required to take the Semester 1 core module EDEN 4004 Teaching Observation & Practicum. This module allows those who are new to English Language Teaching to start developing their confidence and relevant skills, while those with prior teaching experience will find the module to be an effective means of consolidating and refining their existing knowledge and expertise.
All applicants joining the MA TESOL have the option of choosing EITHER the traditional dissertation pathway (which requires the submission of 15k word piece of independent research OR a Teaching Portfolio pathway (which puts more emphasis on the development of practical teaching skills and requires the submission of a series of teaching-related material such as lesson observation reports, learner diaries, lesson plans and teaching materials). Both the Dissertation and the Teaching Portfolio are equally weighted at 60 credits and therefore represent one third of the MA TESOL assessed coursework. Successful completion of either the Dissertation or the Teaching Portfolio is a core requirement of the MA TESOL programme.
All applicants should therefore include a full CV as part of their application. Applicants should also provide *a sample of their academic writing in English. A Skype, telephone or face-to-face interview is normally required as part of the acceptance decision making process.
*Writing sample could be a section from the dissertation/essay or a translated section from the dissertation or a translated essay (word length: around 1,000).
Interview Arrangements: All applicants must also complete an interview with the course admissions tutor. To qualify for an interview, students must achieve the minimum entry criteria of IELTS 6.5 overall with no less than IELTS 6.0 in each of the individual bandings.
Applicants whose overall IELTS score at point of application is 6.0, may, at the discretion of the admissions tutor, be offered an interview to gauge their general aptitude and suitability for taking part in the course.
Please check interview rubric before you attend interview.
Please note the number of places is limited, and applicants need to provide requested valid IELTS score as soon as possible to secure interview opportunities.
