September 2023 New PGR Welcome Events Review

14 September 2023

UNNC warmly welcomed 139 new postgraduate research (PGR) students for the September 2023 entry. Of the 139 PGR students, 94 registered with the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FoSE), 13 registered with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS), and 32 registered with the Nottingham University Business School China (NUBS China). We are thrilled to have such a talented and diverse group of students joining us.

To help our new PGR students settle in, we recently organized a series of welcome events.

On 12 September, an introduction to Graduate School was arranged for the newly registered PGR students. The session provided a comprehensive overview of Graduate School and its resources, as well as an introduction to the various support services available to PGR students.

The informative session was followed by a DTP induction session in the afternoon, which specifically targeted new DTP students. This session provided an opportunity for students to learn more about the DTP programme and its role in supporting PGR research.

Evelyn Lin, Director of Graduate School, gave an opening speech to the DTP students, followed by an introduction delivered by Jessica Wang, DTP Manager and PGR Administrator, who introduced the students to the existing DTP programme and activities related to student journeys.

Dr. Mengxia Xu, Academic Leader for DTP programme with Shandong University and Dr. Ping Fu, Academic leader for DTP programme with Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resource Research joined the session and supported the event.

Both sessions were highly valuable, providing new PGR students with a solid foundation for their academic journey at UNNC.

September 2023 New PGR Student Welcome

The Welcome Lunch was a fantastic opportunity for them to meet and network with their peers, as well as faculty and staff members from across the university. The atmosphere was welcoming and friendly, and the lunch provided a great opportunity for students to get to know each other and to begin building a sense of community.

I still cannot believe that my unrealistic dream of doing a PhD programme at UNNC is happening right now. It might be a tough journey to conquer. However, knowing that the faculty and staff l met during the induction sessions held by the Graduate School are all very friendly and considerate, I am confident that I am at the right place. I believe I will be able to strive for my dreams even more. Besides, as a big fan of ducks, seeing Notting duck pictures in every corner of the campus truly motivates me to do my best. I hope that with the training and facilities provided at UNNC, I will be able to embrace my PhD journey both academically and personally!

Graduate School organized for us new PGR students an induction session. In the session, Dean gave a speech that was very wise and humorous, leaving a deep impression on us. Other staff members helped us quickly understand how Graduate School will give us support along our PGR journeys. When I first entered the campus, I met UNNCers who were very warm and friendly. Special thanks to our two Peer Mentors, who went out of their way to answer our trivial questions and showed us around the campus. In addition, UNNC's library embodies a human-centred design that is truly memorable. The combination of rooms with different functions can meet the needs of different study groups and achieve student-centeredness. The information-based learning environment created by UNNC, such as one-click appointment, online printing, etc., has improved our work efficiency. Kudos to UNNC, kudos to UNNCers!
