Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Electrical and Electronic Engineering offers a diverse array of subjects, encompassing everything from consumer electronics to cutting-edge technologies in the scientific, industrial, and healthcare sectors. This field is integral to modern life, driving innovations that form the backbone of our daily existence. Electrical and electronic engineering is pivotal in advancing diverse realms such as communications, energy infrastructure, medical equipment, and global environmental challenges. It is central to the development of smartphones, complex power systems, lifesaving medical devices, and sustainable energy solutions.
Our department is not only a research-informed hub with strong expertise in key areas such as power electronics, machines and controls, the Internet of Things, healthcare technology, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), but it also enjoys a prestigious position in the global academic community. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), our discipline is ranked within the top 300 in the world, a testament to our excellence in research, teaching, and industry impact.
Our degrees provide a comprehensive foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of electrical and electronic engineering. The undergraduate programmes facilitate opportunities for students to engage in international study, typically during their second or third year. We maintain robust connections with various industries, including telecommunications, VLSI chip design, and the electrical machinery sector. Industry professionals contribute significantly to our teaching and research efforts, assisting in curriculum development. They also engage with the department by recruiting graduates, providing internships and placements, and delivering specialist lectures.
The BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (2+2, 4+0) spans three years and encompasses the broadest technical spectrum of our offerings. This course enables students to explore a wide range of subjects, such as electronic design, communications, software engineering, computer modelling, microelectronics, power generation and distribution, electrical machinery, signal processing, renewable energy systems, and instrumentation. The programme exemplifies multidisciplinarity, adeptly preparing students for the dynamic demands of the modern engineering landscape.
The BEng programme is accredited by the UK-based Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), reflecting its quality recognised by the Engineering Council of the UK (EngC).
