Entry requirements

Course Requirements: 2:1 level or above (or international equivalent) in an appropriate subject. For applicants with a degree from the Chinese mainland universities, the minimum weighted average score varies from 78 to 85, depending on the university where they studied.

Target applicants: Candidates from a wide range of science, technology, and creative design fields who are motivated to pursue innovation-driven research and practice.

English Language Requirements:

  • IELTS 6.0 (no less than 5.5 in any element)
  • PTE Academic 65 (minimum 59)
  • TOEFL (IBT) 80 (minimum 17 in Writing and Listening, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking)

Course overview

MSc Innovative Design is a multidisciplinary programme that brings together creativity and cutting-edge technologies. Students develop expertise in integrated innovation, human–product interaction, digital fabrication, and AI-enabled design, guided by teaching that spans engineering, design, and computing. Aimed at graduates and professionals, the programme helps strengthen innovation skills while broadening perspectives across technology and design, practice and academia. Balancing creative vision with technological practice, it enables students to address real-world challenges through industry-driven projects. Graduates will be prepared with the knowledge and experience to succeed in innovation-led sectors and apply design to contemporary challenges.

Course structure

The MSc Innovative Design is offered as a one-year full-time programme (three semesters) or a two-year part-time option. Component 1 covers 120 credits of taught modules across autumn and spring, including compulsory and optional choices from mechanical, electronic, and computer science. Component 2 is the summer Graduation Dissertation, extending insights from earlier industry-driven projects into academic research.

The programme enables students to gain design experience through industry-related projects and to develop the interdisciplinary mindset needed to address complex real-world challenges. Typical roles for graduates include Interaction Designer, Design Strategist, Product Manager, R&D Engineer, and Design Consultant. Employment sectors range from technology and engineering firms to creative industries, consultancy, and start-ups.
