Lin Shan: UNNC broadens student's horizons and supports her to stand out in the global arena
Lin Shan, a 2014 graduate from UNNC's BEng Chemical Engineering programme achieved a first class degree before pursuing her master's degree at the University of Cambridge in Advanced Chemical Engineering. She has experience working for more than nine companies in more than five countries. In 2021, she returned to China and joined Sunrise Medical as their Marketing and Business Development Manager.
Lin told us that the global vision she obtained at UNNC helps her to stand out in the world arena. What aids her is the critical thinking she learned in her very first class at UNNC. The lesson was that there is no absolute right or wrong, that she should always think holistically, stay humble and keep learning to enrich herself. Lin said that these skills and capabilities have been vital to her further study and work.
Lin built a solid foundation in engineering knowledge and project management during her undergraduate studies. After she started at Cambridge, she was able to experience more industry-related consultant projects, among which include Schlumberger, a leading oilfield services company.
Lin Shan told us that UNNC opened a door to the world for her. Her first official job in a pure English environment was the Dubai Business Internship program. Through this program, she had the chance to work with the Emirates Airlines and Dubai Golf Entity. At the end of this internship, she received the national prize "Dubai-China Cultural Ambassador" from the Dubai government.
Lin shared that UNNC's global alumni network helped her a lot when she worked abroad. "It's wonderful to meet alumni in a foreign country. Thanks to their help, I can adapt to local life more quickly, which also improves my work."
Lin continues to shine in the global job market. Her excellent work experience is a perfect example, showing how capable UNNC graduates are working in different fields and environments. She joined the FTSE100 company Halma as a graduate within its “Future Leader Program”, being their first ever recruited Chinese student. After that, she rotated through four different sectors within the group, including infrastructure safety, process safety, environmental and medical sectors in the UK, France, the US and Germany respectively. In her rotation among different industries, she found her passion in the medical sector and has since been determined to bring cutting-edge medical technologies from the west to China.
In April 2021, Lin returned to China after a long stint of travel overseas and joined Sunrise Medical in Shanghai. She is now leading the company to establish its critical position in the special children's rehab space in China. Last year, she successfully executed a product launch plan for the children's rehab sector that led to sales increasing by 300% in three months. She is making her own contribution to the rehabilitation of special children in China.
Every human being deserves equal treatment, and the right to walk and travel, I hope every child can grow up healthy and happy."
Lin hopes that in the future, she can bring new knowledge and technology to China's rehabilitation industry, and truly help children with special needs, elderly people with mobility difficulties, and people with rare diseases to bring them a better quality of life.
