用虚拟现实技术促进文明的传承

"Cultural heritage is being exposed to greater threats than ever. But digital technologies are making it possible both to preserve and communicate, as well as to mitigate against further damage. In the future, the past will be as accessible as the present."

Eugene Ch’ng 庄以仁

Professor of Cultural Computing

Professor Eugene Ch’ng’s research harnesses state-of-the-art digital technologies for the preservation and communication of cultural heritage. He works with cultural institutions globally, and within China to digitally reproduce sites, monuments and objects, investigating the impact of technologies for preserving heritage, the role of technologies in creating authenticity and value via digital representations, and for enriching the learning in audience experience.

Under his leadership, the NVIDIA Joint-Lab on Mixed Reality at UNNC has reconstructed Ningbo’s Sanjiangkou 13th century seaport in VR. He has also captured the 2,000 years old Tian Tong Temple and over 200 historical artefacts from across China through crowdsourcing simulation, visualisation through connected AR, and developing the concept of the ‘First Original Copy’ using Blockchain technologies. He has been invited to present at Royal Society and UNESCO events and is involved in UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes, George Town Penang in Malaysia, and in the use of complex systems science for modelling climate change for palaeoenvironments in the ‘Lost Frontiers’ European Research Council advanced research grant.
