Media, Gender and Communication Activism in China (Wei BU)

    DB-B01

The UN Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing, 1995) listed “women and the media” as one of the twelve critical areas of concern, and this area was included in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. In her talk, professor Bu will review the history of communication activism since 1995, and account for three action models with a gender perspective. She will also discuss and compare the Chinese practice and the Model of Women’s Media Action (Byerly and Ross, 2006) from the perspective of the international women’s movement, and show how women become agents of gender equality.

Wei BU is a professor at the Institute of Journalism and Communication (IJC) and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). Her research focuses on Communication for Development and Social Change. Professor Bu publishes on media empowerment for marginal groups, feminist media studies, children/youth’s media participation, media literacy education, NGOs’ communication activisms, art activism for social changes, and migrant worker’s cultural studies.

The Dialogues are supported by the IAPS Gender Studies Research Priority Group and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
