On 17 May, the third session of "Let'S talk!" was successfully held. This event invited Dr Calvin M.L. Chan, Assistant Provost at the Singapore University of Social Sciences, to give a public lecture on the impact of digital transformation driving economic and social development, raising students' awareness of ESG and sustainable development.
Professor Jing Dai, the Director of the Center for Responsible Business and Innovation (CRBI), also provided a brief introduction to CRBI and its "Let'S talk!" series. She mentioned that CRBI is dedicated to research, teaching and exchange activities related to responsible business models and sustainable innovation, empowering stakeholders to advocate for environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices. The "Let'S talk!" series launched by CRBI aims to raise public awareness of ESG and promote long-term engagement in sustainable development.
During the keynote speech, Dr Chan presented research and case studies from Singapore to illustrate the gaps in the spread and use of digital technology and its impact on different social groups, particularly the elderly and low-income populations. He emphasised that "socioeconomic status, educational level and cultural capital play important roles in the use of digital technology. It is necessary to pay timely attention to the issue of digital inequality in order to promote the sustainable development of society as a whole."
Building on this, Dr Chan analysed in detail the profound impact of digital transformation on the economy and society, and put forward a proposal to "strengthen digital access and inclusion" based on the development status of China and Singapore. He noted that "inclusive digitalisation is not only a requirement for social justice, but also has important economic significance. It is the key to reducing inequality and promoting sustainable development, which is beneficial to both enterprises and society." In his concluding remarks, Dr Chan emphasised the need for more research to promote the dissemination of inclusive digitalisation and provide strong support for the sustainable development of society.
Dr Zhao Cai, Associate Professor in Information Systems at NUBS China, hosted a quiz and lucky draw, which was highly engaging. Students also had the opportunity to win exquisite gifts prepared by the Center for Responsible Business and Innovation (CRBI) by answering questions related to sustainable development and digital skills. We encourage more students to join the "Let's talk!" series to explore innovative solutions for sustainable development.
