23 June 2025
The International Workshop on Foundations and Applications of Computational Intelligence (FACI 2025) was successfully held on 21 to 22 June at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC).
The conference attracted numerous experts and scholars from many of universities and institutions both in China and abroad, including Lingnan University, Westlake University, City University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Nanyang Technological University, Maastricht University, Chongqing University, Zhejiang University, Zhengzhou University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Shenzhen University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Xiamen University, and more. The scholars gathered together to focus on the latest research advancements and future development trends in the field of computational intelligence, and engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions.
The opening ceremony was addressed by Professor Jon Garibaldi, the chair of the conference. He demonstrated that in the era of rapid technological development, computational intelligence, as an important branch of artificial intelligence, was showing unprecedented potential for development.
Ms Qingyan Wang, Deputy Director of the Artificial Intelligence Bureau of Ningbo City delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Mr Zhifeng Cai, Director of the Industry and Information Technology Bureau of Ningbo High-Tech Zone was also present at the ceremony.
The purpose of this conference was to provide a high-level academic exchange platform for scholars worldwide, to promote the continuous innovation and wide application of computational intelligence technologies, and to inject new vitality into the academic and technological progress in related fields.
During the plenary speeches, the conference invited several distinguished experts with significant influence in the field of computational intelligence. These included Professor Xin Yao from Lingnan University (Hong Kong), Professor Yaochu Jin from Westlake University, Professor Kay Chen Tan from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Professor Yew-Soon Ong from Nanyang Technological University, Professor Anna Wilbik from Maastricht University, Professor Jianyong Sun from Xi'an Jiaotong University, Professor Linlin Shen from Shenzhen University and Professor Min Jiang from Xiamen University.
These experts shared their latest research findings and cutting-edge insights on key scientific issues related to the foundations and applications of computational intelligence, presenting a splendid academic feast for the participants and significantly broadening the academic horizons of the participating scholars.
The conference featured three panel discussions. The ‘Tips on publishing high-quality research papers’ session was chaired by Professor Jon Garibaldi. Professor Xin Yao, Professor Jun Wang from City University of Hong Kong, Professor Huajin Tang from Zhejiang University and Professor Linlin Shen shared their unique and profound insights on how to write high-quality academic papers, select appropriate journals and respond to reviewers' comments based on their rich academic experience. This provided valuable guidance for young scholars in academic writing and publication.
The ‘Tips on writing good research proposals’ session was led by Professor Guoping Qiu. Professor Yaochu Jin, Professor Kay Chen Tan and Professor Ran Cheng from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Professor Jing Liang from Zhengzhou University engaged in a fascinating discussion and shared their insights on key aspects of research proposal writing. This provided clear ideas and methodological guidance for young scholars in research project applications and design.
The ‘Tips sharing for young researchers’ session was chaired by Professor Sean He. Professor Anna Wilbik, Professor Jialin Liu from Lingnan University, Professor Liang Feng from Chongqing University, and Professor Malu Zhang from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China shared their valuable experiences and insights based on their personal growth and research practice. The forum featured a lively discussion atmosphere, with young scholars actively asking questions and experts providing patient answers. The collision of ideas sparked wisdom, and the strong academic atmosphere permeated the entire conference, providing strong support and motivation for the academic growth of young scholars. Participants also had a tour of the beautiful campus afterward.
As the conference drew to a close, the organising committee conducted an in-depth summary of the fruitful achievements. The successful hosting of the conference not only provided a high-level academic exchange platform for experts and scholars in the field of computational intelligence and promoted the collision and integration of academic ideas, but also pointed the way for the innovative application of related technologies. It promoted the application and development of computational intelligence technologies in a wider range of fields.
