As the 2023 Formula Student China concluded recently, UNNC Formula Student team won the national third prize in the Formula Student Electric China category among more than 70 teams from the leading universities in China. This year, the team also earned the “Outstanding Publicity Team of the Year" award.

The Formula Student China (FSC) series of events are organised by the China Society of Automotive Engineers (China-SAE). They are the highest-level, most widely participated automotive engineering competition in China, with the greatest impact. The competition is dedicated to providing a public platform for the training and selection of outstanding automotive talents in China. Through comprehensive assessment, it enhances students' skills in design, manufacturing, cost control, business marketing, communication, and coordination.

UNNC Formula Student team was established in 2017. It consists of four teams including electronic control, machinery, driver and commercial sub-teams. Currently, there are 40 members from different programmes in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Sciences, Mathematics with Applied Mathematics. Some team members are also from Nottingham University Business School China. UNNC Formula Student team received great support from Dr Dunant Halim, Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, FoSE Innovation Lab, Department of Campus Life and UNNC Education Foundation.

This year, UNNC Formula Student team used a brand-new electric racing car to compete. Compared with previous racing cars, this car has greatly improved both mechanically and electrically. This racing car adopts a new frame design and EIC system, namely the motor, controller, battery, has been newly designed, which increases the maximum output power of the racing car from the original 40 kilowatts to 60 kilowatts, reaching 50% increase.

According to team leader Yining Chen, a final year student majoring in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, this year, their new racing car adopts a new torque control system. Worth mentioning, the driver also plays a vital role in the competition in the R&D phase. The team used the car racing simulator to improve its aerodynamic performance. In the car design and business model analysis, the new electric car achieved high evaluation.

The UNNC Formula Student team member Zhengming Ma and Yining Chen, all mentioned that this experience has brought them lots of benefits in extending the knowledge in the field and enhancement of transferrable skills. They also liked to work in a team that shares the same goals and make their campus experience more colourful.

This year, the team has shared more vehicle engineering and racing car related knowledge in their official WeChat account. They also extended the engagement with local students. In June 2023, Ningbo British International School students visited UNNC and had an inspiring workshop with Dr Dunant Halim and the Formula Student team. They learned about the electric racing car and university students' daily life.
