12 March 2024

On 9th March, the first session of “FoSE Research Journal Lecture” was successfully held in the D.H. Lawrence Auditorium. Professor Xiaosu Yi, Li Dak Sum Chair Professor in Advanced Materials and Composites delivered a fantastic lecture about the multifunctional composite technology and green materials. About 400 local students, school teachers and parents joined the session.

Professor Tao Wu, Dean of Faculty of Science and Engineering gave a welcoming address. “This year, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of UNNC. The ‘FoSE Research Journal Lecture’ project aims to inspire more local students to find their interests in science and technology and contribute to the development of the society and the country.” Professor Wu also wished the “FoSE Research Journal Lecture” a successful debut.

The lecture lasted for 40 minutes with an additional 20 minutes for the Q&A session. Professor Yi started with a brief introduction to the Wright brothers, who flew the world’s first successful airplane and illustrated what material the airplane was made for. Professor Yi used many intriguing video clips to help students understand why the green composite material is so vital to the aviation industry.

Later, Professor Yi showcased some of his research works, many of which were international collaboration cases and needed the joint efforts of global scholars. When Professor Yi talked about the collaboration with the leading companies and institutes, students were so proud of the research outputs and the industrial development in China.

A student from Yinzhou Senior High School said after the lecture that “Professor Yi picturized the application of the most cutting-edge technology and how it changes the world we live today. I am getting clearer about my future path and I am more determined.”

The Faculty of Science and Engineering is going to continue the “FoSE Research Journal” project, sharing our research outputs both online and offline, and enlightening the spark of inspiration to the science and engineering study of young people.
