FoSE students won Provincial First Prize in Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling
28 October 2025
A team of three computer science students from the UNNC Faculty of Science and Engineering – Jing Huang, Jiale Qin, and Haochen Huang – has won the Zhejiang Provincial First Prize in the 2025 Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling. This achievement marks the highest honour received by UNNC in this year’s competition.
The contest, first held in 1992, has grown into one of the largest mathematical modeling contests in China and even worldwide. This year, it attracted over 200,000 participants from more than 1,800 universities across 33 provinces and regions, including international teams. Mathematical modeling serves as a critical link between theoretical knowledge and real-world problem-solving, testing students' ability to apply mathematical tools to practical challenges.
Driven by their previous unsuccessful attempt, the team returned with stronger determination. As Jiale Qin shared, "Two years of learning at UNNC gave me the confidence and knowledge to try again." Without systematic coaching, the students relied heavily on the solid foundation built through their coursework. Modules such as “Programming and Algorithms”, “Programming Paradigms”, and “Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence” provided essential skills and methodologies that were directly applied in the contest.
The team also highlighted the value of the Faculty Undergraduate Research Practice (FURP), which offered early exposure to solving real-world problems. As Jing Huang noted, "FURP improved our modeling and coding skills and taught us how to collaborate efficiently under pressure."
Faculty of Science and Engineering always puts students at the centre, offering extensive resources and an inspiring academic environment. Professor Bencan Tang, Associate Dean for Education and Student Experience, emphasised, "We encourage students to apply classroom knowledge to real challenges and will continue providing resources to help them unlock their potential."
This year, UNNC sent 71 teams to the contest, achieving record results: one first prize, one second prize, five third prizes, and 38 successful participation awards at the provincial level. As these students demonstrate, UNNC’s commitment to empowering students continues to yield remarkable outcomes on bigger stages.
