Welcoming the first cohort of new master students in Supply Chain Management

16 September 2021

The road to SCM is a one-week orientation experience filled with fun, laughter, and learning.

As we begin the 2021-22 academic year, we are thrilled to welcome 30 students from four countries to the first-ever new masters programme – MSc International Business (Supply Chain Management). This week from 13th to 17th September, all our students are on campus for orientation, and class will begin next Monday, 20th September.

More than 15 events are taking place in-person and online. The event lineup features an official welcome, campus tour, ice-breaking party, first-aid training, industry visit, IT training, facilities training and so on. Students can connect and become a part of the vibrant postgraduate community.

During the welcome ceremony, Professor Martin Lockett, Dean of Nottingham University Business School China (NUBS China) and Professor Jay Guo, Dean of Ningbo China Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (NISCI) welcomed all the new students. Professor Yossi Sheffi, Professor of Engineering Systems at MIT, expressed, "This is an important day for the students of the incoming class as well as the academic institutions involved. Supply chain management is now recognised not only as one of the most important corporate functions but is also recognised by consumers and people everywhere. Managing supply chains becomes more challenging and a lot more important. This is probably the best time ever to work in supply chain management. You have chosen well. I look forward to revisiting China and revisiting Ningbo, hopefully shortly, and meet all of you in person. Congratulations and good luck in your studies."

The upcoming weeks will be full of activities that support academic success and connect students with the larger campus community, along with active learning experiences that enhance student engagement in social and academic environments.

Thomas Kodden, aged 23, a student from The Netherlands, said, "Before joining this new masters programme, I pursued a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in The Netherlands. During the study, Supply chain was part of it, and I was very interested. After graduation, I had an internship and some work experience in supply chain management. I found that there was much more for me to learn to become a supply chain management professional in the future. With the desire of gaining further knowledge and speciality, combined with the deep interest I have in Asia and the status of China in this field, I found this programme on the internet and applied for it. I hope to experience China and build a network."

The MIT SCALE Nottingham Ningbo (MSNN) Masters in Supply Chain Management is jointly taught by the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) and the Ningbo China Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (NISCI), as part of the MIT Global SCALE Network. Students study in Ningbo and have the opportunity to spend 3 weeks at MIT in the USA. Graduates will be awarded the degree of MSc International Business (Supply Chain Management) from the University of Nottingham (UK) and an MIT SCALE graduate certificate.
