2022 New Student Welcome Ceremony

14 September 2022

The New Student Welcome Ceremony was held online due to the pandemic. The ceremony began with an orchestral performance. The Provost, Professor Nick Miles expressed his warm welcome to the 2022 new students in a welcome video and placed great hopes on them by saying, "Your journey starts today. There will be great days ahead and a few tough ones as well, but all of these experiences will shape a future in which you will become a well-rounded individual who is qualified, confident, and enriched because of the time you spent on this campus."

As an alumnus of the University of Nottingham, Dr K. Cohen Tan, Interim Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, shared his understanding of the "Nottingham spirit", that is, you have to inhabit it, plant your flag, and then continue to move on, "All growth takes place outside your comfort zone, and once you open your mind, it will never return to the state of ignorance that it was in."

Wu Bing, NUBS China Alumna, who in 2008 graduated from the Finance, Accounting and Management programme spoke as an alumni representative. At present, she is a mother of two children and also runs a manufacturing group with a turnover of over a billion RMB. She recalled a speech delivered by Professor Yang Fujia, the late President of UNNC, expressing the importance of liberal arts education and its impact on her career development. "In today's changing world, we don't know what the future will look like. And with this uncertainty, what we need is a broad, deep and strong platform, so that throughout the rest of your careers, you will not only able to adapt quickly but also be creative and lead. This platform is what our university's liberal art education will bring you. It will give you the kind of preparation you need," said she.

Fang Shuyi, a final year student studying Finance, Accounting and Management, spoke as a representative of the current students. She made two suggestions to first-year students about to start university life. The first is to be full of confidence and the second is to seize every opportunity. "You are not here to compete with others, but to compete with yourself. You are here to discover your interests and strengths, broaden your horizons, and shape your understanding of academics, careers, and life. Also, do not waste the opportunities and try to make full use of the resources provided by the university to discover your potential and develop yourself all around. "

In Zheng Shuxing's speech, a new student representative spoke about cherishing the memory of President Yang Fujia and quoted his words to encourage other peers, "Find the spark in your heart and ignite it!" and "No question, no invention."
