Prof. Xiaogang Yang and his research team’s project entitled “Investigation on gas-liquid-solid three phase flow coupled with meso-scale particle-bubble interactions, particle-liquid turbulence and bubble induced turbulence in bubble column reactors” has been funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)-German Research Foundation (DFG) international joint research programme with the amount of 4,000,000 RMB. This project is the first of its kind that UNNC received from NSFC under its International joint research programme.
This joint research project is led by Prof Xiaogang Yang, Head of Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, with three core members who are Dr Guang Li, Dr Jie Yang and Dr Yong Ren at UNNC. Prof Xiaogang Yang has also received more than 1.5 million RMB for the General Programme and Major Research Plan of National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2016. Its German part is led by Prof Martin Sommerfeld from Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, who is also a leading researcher in the multiphase flow research area.
This project aims to investigate gas-liquid-solid three phase flow coupled with meso-scale interactions between particles and bubbles, bubble induced turbulence and particle modulated liquid turbulence exerted by solid particles and bubble with different sizes and develop corresponding modified liquid turbulent models to describe their complex interactions. It can be widely applied in the Chemical Engineering, pharmaceutical industry, food process and energy industry and has profound impact on people’s life in all aspects.
According to the bilateral cooperation agreement from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the German Research Foundation (DFG), both sides will co-fund Sino-German cooperation research programme to facilitate the exchange of the researchers. After panel review, 131 projects out of 563 projects applied have successfully received funding for the duration of three years.
