Jiayi Qiu, who studied Architectural Environment Engineering and graduated in 2014, was honoured by Phoenix TV, a Hong Kong-based TV network, at their annual You Bring Charm to the World awards.

The awards, which were this year held at Tsinghua University in Beijing, honour internationally influential Chinese people. Some 100 individuals and organisations have been recognised at the awards in the past eight years.

Jiayi was given his award in recognition of being the first student from outside the UK or Ireland to be recognised by a President’s Award from the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

He shared the stage with other inspirational Chinese people such as Hong Kong sinologist Jao Tsung-I, nuclear physicist Yu Min, Chinese American HIV/AIDS researcher David Da-i Ho and meteorologist Wang Bin, known for developing a global system to predict climate change.

Chinese operatic soprano He Hui and Tan Yuanyuan, principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet, were honoured for their influence in the arts.

Jiayi, who was one of the youngest winners, was presented his award by Chen Xu, chair of Tsinghua University’s affairs committee. He thanked UNNC for nurturing his ideas and for the support he had received from tutors during his time here.

He added: “I want to thank all those who have helped and supported me over the years, my classmates, and friends. It would not be possible for me to achieve this without your support.

“I want to share this award with my young colleagues who are still working hard in labs and computer rooms and say to them that no matter what difficulties you meet, you can tackle them!”
