On 28 April 2026, as part of the Cosy Island initiative, the Department of Campus Life and the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, in collaboration with Jiangshan Town People’s Government and the Yinzhou Folk Literature and Art Association, hosted the cultural event “No Horses in Zoumatang: Savouring Pastoral Charm in an Ancient Village at Zoumatang.” Known as “China’s No. 1 Jinshi Village,” Zoumatang provided a vivid and meaningful setting for this cross-cultural experience.
Domestic and international staff and students explored Zoumatang’s historic landmarks, enjoyed culture-themed rural banquets and local delicacies, experienced traditional crafts such as Flower Cakes and Imperial Scholar Cakes, walked through picturesque paddy fields, and joined serene tea gatherings accompanied by live traditional performances. Through these activities, participants immersed themselves in the authentic rhythms of Jiangnan rural life and the aesthetic charm of Chinese culture.
This experiential activity fostered cross-cultural exchange, deepened students’ understanding of Chinese rural heritage, and strengthened cooperation between the university and the local community. By integrating ancient village culture, rural revitalization, and international cultural dialogue, the event offered a sustainable model for preserving tradition while promoting global appreciation of Chinese rural culture.
