The Yangming Lighting Design Exhibition, titled “Light of Mind,” was recently held at Wang Yangming’s Former Residence in Yuyao. Second-year students from the Product Design and Manufacture programme at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China explored how Yangming philosophy can be reinterpreted through contemporary lighting design.

In these works, light goes beyond its functional role to become a medium for expressing inner truth, self-reflection, belief, personal growth, and ultimately, the tranquility of home and country. Drawing inspiration from the architectural details, spatial atmosphere, and philosophical spirit of Wang Yangming’s Former Residence, the students translated abstract cultural concepts into tangible design experiences that can be seen, felt, and engaged with.

When traditional culture meets young designers, design becomes a powerful act of translation, one that bridges historical thought, local memory, and contemporary life, allowing heritage to evolve and remain vibrantly alive in the present.
