The Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering has received accreditation from Institution of Engineering Designers (iED) for its BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering and BEng (Hons) Product Design and Manufacture programmes for five years from the 2019 year of intake, following a virtual visit to the Department in October 2021.

Various aspects of the programme were examined, including the curriculum, quality of assessment, academic staff, teaching facilities, learning resources, quality assurance procedures, the way examinations are carried out, and most importantly, student achievements in international competitions over the years.

The panel members were impressed with the industrial advisory board engagement, the workshop facilities, development of the studios, and staff engagement and commitments. Following the visit, the panel was pleased to again accredit our BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design and Manufacture programme for five years (2019-2024) – the longest period which can be recommended.

The Institution of Engineering Designers is a British professional engineering institution founded in 1945. The iED is the UK’s only professional body representing those working in the fields of Engineering and Technological Product Design and the only organisation able to grant Chartered status to product design professionals.

Once accredited, the programmes will be featured in the iED Accredited Programmes list and are fully supported by the Institution. ME and PDM degree students will be registered for iED student membership during their studies. The graduates of these two programmes will benefit from a more straightforward process when applying for professional registration. It also helps improve UNNC’s graduate employability by linking to UK-SPEC, ensuring that students have developed the appropriate skills and knowledge for an engineering career and professional registration.
