On 18 June 2026, the 8th FoSE PGR Research Showcase was successfully concluded at the PMB Atrium. The event featured 183 posters, covering research areas including Built Environment, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Operations Research, Computational Intelligence in Transport, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Renewable Energy Technologies, Geographic Science, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Sustainable Energy Technologies, Sustainable Building Technology, and Aerospace Engineering.
To enrich the exhibition format and enhance the accessibility of academic exchange, a Research Demo session was introduced for the first time. Five PGR students presented their research demo, making their research outcomes tangible and accessible. This new format significantly improved interactive engagement and enabled attendees to better comprehend research mechanisms and potential applications, receiving positive feedback from the attendees. The event attracted over 300 participants in total.
The showcase was hosted by Dr Boon Giin Lee, FoSE PGR Director. Professor John Zhou, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, delivered the opening address. Professor Zhou noted that the Research Showcase serves as a key academic event within the Faculty's PGR framework, and encouraged students to broaden their research perspectives through interdisciplinary engagement while enhancing their scholarly communication skills.
Three distinguished guests were invited to deliver speeches: Mr Shihong Jiang, Director of Visual Algorithm at Chongqing Qianli Zhijia Technology Co., Ltd.; Ms Yin Xu, head of an innovative business unit at Alibaba; and Dr Yue Li, Honorary Alumna of the University of Nottingham. Mr Shihong Jiang spoke on "The Evolution and Future of AI Algorithms in Autonomous Driving," offering a systematic review of algorithmic developments in the field and a forward-looking analysis of emerging trends. Ms Yin Xu addressed the audience on "What Really Matters in a Job?" Drawing on years of experience in the internet industry, she shared thoughtful reflections on career choices, competency development, and professional fulfilment. Dr Yue Li delivered a talk titled "From PhD Student to Academic Lead: A Ten-Year Retrospective," tracing her personal trajectory from doctoral studies to assuming academic leadership, and providing valuable insights into long-term career planning in research.
A panel of 47 expert reviewers evaluated the submissions based on multiple criteria including research originality, academic rigour, and presentation quality. Following a rigorous review process, the awards were conferred as follows: two First Prizes, three Second Prizes, four Third Prizes, and five Most Creative Awards for Best Posters.
