Dr Chiew-Foong Kwong, an Associate Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, has been officially appointed as a member of the Academic Accreditation Committee (AAC) by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on 7th October, 2021.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is a UK-based professional engineering institution (PEI) and an institution licensed by the Engineering Council of United Kingdom for the academic accreditation and registration of professional engineers. With over 170,000 members around the globe, it is the largest PEI in the UK and the second largest in the world. The IET strives to inspire, inform and influence the global engineering community to engineer a better world. The IET is a diverse centre for engineering and technology, sharing knowledge that helps to better understand the world in order to solve the challenges that matter.
The IET accredits over 1800 academic programmes in the UK and over 130 programmes around the world. The BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree programme in the UNNC is also accredited by the IET. The accreditation process is recognised globally through the Washington and Sydney accords under the International Engineering Alliance (IEA).
In the IET, the AAC is a decision-making body for the granting of accreditation to academic institutions wishing to seek recognition by the Engineering Council of UK. The committee has a balanced representation of members from academia and industry. The AAC in the IET is responsible for developing, implementing and reviewing policies and procedures for the accreditation of academic programmes that either contribute to or meet current and future educational requirements for professional registration with the Engineering Council of UK, taking into account the current and future needs of industry.
Andy Downtown, the Chair of AAC, said in the invitation letter to Dr Chiew-Foong Kwong, "We appreciate your passion for the industry, and we need a diverse group of professionals to ensure that we are well represented in academia and industry. Therefore, I sincerely hope you can join us.' This words reflect not only Dr Kwong's love for his work, but also the confidence of the AAC.
Dr Kwong's recognition and contribution to the IET is not new. He has been a member of the IET since 2006 and gained his professional engineer registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) in 2012. He was elected as the Chairman of the Young Professional Section of the IET Malaysia Network from 2008 to 2011. His highest elected position was as a member of the IET Council, a top consultative body in the IET governance structure, which he served for a full 3-year term from 2011 to 2014. He is also currently a trained Professional Registration Interviewer (PRI), where he interviews Chartered Engineer candidates on behalf of the IET. He is also a member of the IET Registration and Standards Committee (R&SC), an influential committee that has oversight of academic accreditations, professional engineer registration, appointment of IET Fellows, etc. Dr Kwong also is a recipient of the IET Volunteer Core Values Award for Integrity.
