The Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian Awards (TOYM) programme originated from Junior Chamber International’s Ten Outstanding Young People of the World (TOYP). It aims to accord recognition to young Malaysians between the ages of 18 to 40, whose dedication to their profession or life’s undertakings has resulted in exceptional achievement, in the form of significant contributions to the progress or welfare of the community at large, and to the advancement of their respective field of endeavour.
For this award, Dr. Pang was acknowledged for leading the advancement of knowledge as well as for his achievements and excellence in research, teaching, leadership and outreach. Dr. Pang is a leading researcher in renewable energy and in developing advanced bio-medical materials from renewable sources. Dr. Pang’s work has been published in top tier international journals and presented (including keynote) at international conferences around the world. Dr. Pang has filed more than 15 patents and has actively driven the knowledge transfer between industry and academia. The PAnG method developed by Dr. Pang is widely used in industries across the UK, particularly in power stations and furnace manufacturers. Dr. Pang has been successful in securing funding and leading projects like the S&T Innovation 2025 Major Special Program, the Ningbo Natural Science Foundation Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) International Young Scientists Research Fellowship.
Dr. Pang is also supervising outreach projects to involve high school students in science and engineering research. His group of 16 year old students have published journal papers and filed patent, and had won First Prize in the scheme organized by local government twice consecutively. This reflects Dr. Pang’s efforts in promoting equality in science and engineering regardless of age, race and sex.

I would also like to thank JCI for this wonderful opportunity and stage to not only share our experience and humble achievements, but also to inspire and encourage future generations to serve the greater humanity regardless of where they may be’, said in his acceptance speech.
He added, ‘This honour will also act as a constant reminder to all of us to strive for excellence and never settle for anything less than our best efforts’.
Dr. Pang received his Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus under a full scholarship from the Malaysia Government. He graduated with a First Class honours degree and he was the Top Student of the Year 2008. He then pursued his PhD degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Nottingham UK Campus under a full scholarship jointly sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC UK), the University of Nottingham UK, and Alstom, a French multi-national company.
Dr. Pang is currently an Associate Professor of Chemical and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Science and Engineering here at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. He is also the Deputy Head of Department, Director of Teaching and Learning, Deputy Head of Research Group (Advanced Energy and Environmental Materials Technology) and the Director of the Joint Doctoral Training Program between UNNC and Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
