On the evening of 6 May 2026, the Science and Engineering Student Association (SESA) from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) visited UNNC Affiliated High School to host a “Science Expo” event, featuring an AI lecture and a series of immersive science experiments.
The highlight of the evening was a talk by Dr Chen Xinan from the School of Computer Science, titled Common is Not Equal to Correct – The Hidden Flaws of Artificial Intelligence. Using clear language and real-world examples, Dr Chen explained that AI works by detecting patterns in data rather than by magic. He pointed out that AI can suffer from hallucinations, data bias, and errors in areas such as self-driving cars, medical diagnosis, and hiring systems. Through interactive discussions and Q&A, students developed a balanced and critical understanding of AI.
Following the lecture, students took part in a series of visually striking experiments—including Palm Flame, Fire-Spitting Bottle, Luminol Experiment, and Colourful Fire Tornado—which brought the principles of combustion, air pressure, chemiluminescence, and flame reaction to life through thrilling hands-on interaction.
A quiz session reinforced key concepts from the experiments and AI talk, allowing students to review what they had learned in a fun and engaging way.
The event was jointly organised by the UNNC Science and Engineering Student Association (SESA) and the Youth League Committee of UNNC Affiliated High School. SESA continues to promote science outreach, using lively and interactive methods to spark curiosity and scientific thinking among young learners.
