28th-29th November: the panel member appointed by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) conducted an accreditation visit to the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering to review the quality of the BEng(Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and BEng(Hons) in Product Design and Manufacturing. The IET is doing the accreditation visit on behalf of the Engineering Council of UK (ECUK).
Various aspect of the programme was probed, including the quality of the assessments, the academic staffs, teaching facilities, learning resource facilities, quality assurance procedures, the conduct of the examinations, and most importantly, the student’s achievement of the Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (AHEP) learning outcomes published by ECUK.
The panel members scrutinised the sample exam scripts, coursework, reports, final year project thesis, exam questions and solutions, interview students and the professional advisory board (PAB) members.
After the final discussion, the IET panel was pleased with the quality of the degree in all aspects, and decided to accredit our BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design and Manufacturing programme for five (5) years – the longest period can be recommended.
IET is one of the world’s leading professional societies for engineers and technicians and their accreditation covers a whole range of subjects including electrical, electronic, manufacturing, mechanical, systems and software engineering including bioengineering, nanotechnology and renewable energy. It’s recognised globally as an indicator of quality through the Washington and Sydney accords, which are governed by the International Engineering Alliance (IEA).
Once accredited, the programme will be featured in the IET Accredited Programmes list and graduates will benefit from a more straightforward process when applying for professional registration. It also helps improved our graduate employability by linking to UK-SPEC, ensuring that students have developed the appropriate skills and knowledge for an engineering career and professional registration.
