16 Oct, 38 staff and students visited the Museum of Ningbo Golden Lacquered Wood Carvings. The skill to make golden lacquered wood carvings was listed in China’s first group intangible cultural heritage, as this skill had over 1000 years’ history. It was initially widely used in temples, then gradually applied to people’s daily used goods. Given by its splendid colour and exquisite carving patterns, the art pieces saw its prosperity in Song Dynasty as a symbol of Ningbo’s marriage culture. The over 200-kilogram bridal sedan chair, over 1000 working hours made big bed and other collections in the museum could all be evidence of it.

After learning the raw materials of the golden lacquered wood carvings, the visitors finally got a chance to learn the skill. The experiments enhanced participants’ understanding towards the Chinese intangible cultural heritage many of them said that they are amazed by the handcraft makers wisdom, innovation and persistent training.

This event was jointly organised by UNNC Graduate School, Confucius Institute and Department of Campus Life.
