The first students have completed UNNC's IC design training
All but two of the students that enrolled on the three-month training programme, launched recently by The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) and British company Sondrel, have been offered internships.
They will begin four-month placements at IC design consultancy Sondrel, before being eligible to apply for a job at the company.
Some students will also have the opportunity to work on projects with Sondrel’s partners Cisco Systems, the world's largest supplier of computer networking systems, and semiconductor design company AMD.
The training programme enables students to gain an in-depth knowledge of leading-edge design methodologies and was created after Sondrel identified a lack of IC designers in China with the skills the company needs to continue its rapid expansion.
Delivered by UNNC engineering staff and Sondrel engineers at the Nottingham-Sondrel School of VLSI Design, it is hoped the training will plug the talent gap and improve China’s ability to compete globally in the IC design market.
To support the training software worth $10m was donated by Sondrel’s partner company Mentor Graphics, a leader in electronic design automation software.
A subset of electrical and computer engineering, integrated circuits are crucial in the manufacture of digital devices such as computers and mobile phones.
Liu Yuyan, who studied microelectronics at Fudan University before completing the course at UNNC, will work with AMD in Shanghai. He said the training programme has helped him lay the foundation for a successful career.
He said: "This professional training has rapidly grown my skills. The teachers here have practical engineering experience and have exposed me to the latest knowledge.
"Not only did I get a good job at the end of the course, but I’m also able to work on projects for world-class companies like AMD. This is a great starting point for my career."
