Although BIM has developed vigorously in China over the past few years, at present the supply of talent still falls far short of demand. This skills gap threatens to widen further over the next few years as the analytics, logistics and supply software becomes ever more commonplace in Chinese design and construction projects.
Since the University introduced advanced BIM experience from the UK three years ago, UNNC has being doing its part to help increase the available pool of talent. During this time, the University has signed several BIM-related MoUs with various international associations and companies, of which the CIOB is the latest significant partner.
Among the provisions of the MoU are talent exchanges between UNNC and CIOB, joint development of CIOB certification training in China and information & resource sharing between R&D on both sides.
Dr. Llewellyn Tang, Director of Digital City and Infrastructure Technology Innovation (D-CiTi) laboratory stated that the deal could help define the development of the architecture, engineering and construction industry in China. “This partnership is crucial for the entire AEC industry on its future and proper use of digital technology,” he said. “This will amplify appetites and ultimately unlock the BIM talents and all other digital built professionals via world class R&D and training products.”
Chris Blythe, CEO of CIOB UK said that he was looking forward to the challenge of raising BIM standards in China. “With this excellent centre in China, we believe our collaboration will facilitate the drive to upskill Chinese and international professionals in BIM,” he said. “We look forward to collaborating with the UNNC to provide professional and vocational qualifications to raise the level of professional competence.”
UNNC Provost Chris Rudd agreed that the MoU offered great potential. “With collaboration in the area of BIM training, research, professional development and mobility,” he said, “the two parties can make extraordinary contributions in cultivating BIM talents”.
